In Nutritional Therapy, we help clients feel better by improving their digestion, blood sugar balance, essential fatty acid balance, mineral balance and hydration – while strengthening their elements of The WHOLESTIC Method (stress!). We are all unique bio-individuals so there is not one size fits all diet for everyone to follow and get the results they have been looking for all year.
My goal when working with clients is to help them determine which real, nutrient dense whole foods are best for them to eat based on their gut biome (VIOME results), blood sugar levels, genetic tests (Check out DNA Fit) and digestion/absorbtion. Also we need to always focus on what they are eating and how much- but HOW they are eating and HOW they are feeling when they are eating. Most people tend to eat fast, not chew their food completely and multi-task while eating (SNS vs. PNS) which will shut off the digestive processes that occur when we are in the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS).
I always like to have my clients track what they are eating with they symptoms, energy levels and mood after they eat. If they ate the right foods for their metabolic type then we are on the right track.
Here is a helpful chart I saved from my Nutritional Therapy Practitioner school program:
If you ate the right ratio of fat, protein and carbs then around three hours after your meal you should…
- feel full and satisfied
- do not have any sweet cravings
- do not desire more food
- do not get hungry soon after eating
- do not need to snack before next meal
- energy is restored after eating
- have good, lasting sense of energy and well-being
- feel refueled or restored
- uplift in emotions
- improved clarity of mind
- normalization of thought processes
If you ate the wrong ratio of fat, protein and carbs then you…
- feel physically full but still hungry
- don’t feel satisfied, feel like something was missing from the meal
- have desire for sweets
- feel hungry again soon after a meal
- need to snack between meals
- too much or too little energy
- become hyper, jittery, shaky, nervous or speedy
- feel hyper but exhausted underneath
- energy drop, fatigue, exhaustion, sleeplessness, drowsiness, lethargy or listlessness
- mentally slow, sluggish and spacey
- inability to think clearly, quickly
- overly rapid thoughts
- inability to focus
- hypo-apathy, depression and sadness
- hyper-anxiety, obsessive behavior, fearfulness, anger and irritability
Interesting right? Well you may have been reading blogs about ketosis, gut health and its relationship to brain health. The above lists to help you fine tune your food intake and meal planning also shows many of the similar symptoms to blood sugar dysregulation (sugar burner, gut issues (microbiome imbalance and leaky gut), HPA Axis dysregulation (adrenal fatigue), and much more.
I suggest working with a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner to help transform the WHOLE you from the inside out as you work on getting healthy this year. There is a lot more to losing weight and improving your health by eating real whole foods. How many carbohydrates (and which ones) can you tolerate without creating high blood sugar levels and insulin surges depends on YOU.
