Important Reasons Why We Should Shiver Each Day

I live in Seattle, WA but I do love hot weather.   Summer time, I love a 80-90′ sunny day and I especially love being near a sandy beach and blue ocean.   So the popularity of being cold and shivering a few times a day is a hard one for me to implement into my day.  Why should we submerge ourselves, including our head, into a cold (32′) freezer tub for cold thermogenesis or run outside in the cold weather with barely any clothes?  Why should we shiver when we are told we will catch a cold if we get cold or stay outside with wet hair?

Why do I need to SHIVER??  

Hormesis.

We need to be able to adapt and recover from a stressor.  I know when we “run from a lion”, we hopefully have time to recover, rest and rebuild from that quick emergency threat.  We adapt.  We are able to switch back and forth from the sympathetic nervous system to the parasympathetic nervous system quickly.

Our problem is our addiction to busyness and being chronically stressed which results in being chronically stuck in the sympathetic nervous system.  We have lost our ability to adapt to a source of stress or threat then recover.

Our ancestors had time to recover… instead we live life as a RACE and don’t stop to breathe.  Regarding being cold, just as being hungry, our ancestors had to adapt the the weather and the food available depending on the season.  Instead, we eat when we think or see food plus we put on the car seat heater, add extra layers on to our outfit and bed at night time- or increase the heat in the house to stay comfortable.

COLD EXPOSURE IS IMPORTANT

When we expose ourselves to cold, our bodies go through a process of cold adaptation. This is built into us from the time long ago when the dinosaurs went extinct.

The meteor that hit the earth caused decades, no, centuries of cold temperatures and ash covered the earth. It was dispersed in the atmosphere and didn’t come down for a long time.

Much of the world was then covered in ice during the ice ages that humans adapred to and lived with until very recently.
