Are gaining weight even though eating less?

Meal Plan

Did you wake up and feel 30 pounds heavier today?

The struggle is real.  I have been there myself… really.

In 2013, I went from an ambitious, high performing endurance athlete, who was doing all the “right” things, to an exhausted, heavy and inflamed individual. Since my “sudden” weight gain, I have been on an ongoing journey to become educate to help myself and to help others avoid going down this road that I went down in 2013.

Chronic stress and weight gain are an issue in our society- especially during this crazy time in our world.  External chronic stressors and HIDDEN internal stressors impact the WHOLE you from the inside out.  You may be eating REAL nutritious food, but you may still experience a domino effect of internal breakdown and burnout of body systems that sent me in search for quick answers.  I wanted to feel my best, look my best and perform my best in LIFE.  Shocking news…my sudden and stubborn weight gain had nothing to do with WHAT I was EATING or if I was EXERCISING.

I often coach my clients to focus on WHAT they are eating but also HOW, WHEN and WHY.  Sometimes that helps them start to lose weight – but often we need to look “under the hood” and investigate a little further to collect missing pieces of the puzzle together.  I help other driven and ambitious individuals get their body and vibrant self-back again by running functional lab test and collecting clues to their WHY.  Everyone is unique and there is not a “one size fits all approach” to weight loss- or rather FAT LOSS as I like to tell my clients.

When I woke up 30 pounds heavier, “one day”, I was doing intermittent fasting, eating low carbohydrates and exercising daily.  BUT I was not taking care of my WHOLE self as in reality I was “living life as a race” and not living it as a journey.

  • Stress is on… Blood sugar is Elevated.
  • Stress is on… Digestion is turned OFF
  • Stress is on… Immune system is Depressed
  • Stress is on… and doesn’t turn off then…” METABOLIC CHAOS®” results

Are you curious WHY you are gaining weight or not able to lose weight… or FAT weight?

What are the signs you should look for to determine, understand or investigate if WHAT you eating is contributing to your unexplained weight gain or inability to burn fat?

Healthy Gut Lining
How does your gut look from the inside?
Stop guessing and start testing!

There are MANY reasons and contributors to struggling with fat loss but let me pick my top three choices for you to start thinking about…and bonus tip to stop being a slave to the scale and start listening and learning from your own body!

Your body probably has been sending your many “Red Flags” to slow down, reset and reboot the WHOLE you from the inside for months, or years, if you want to burn fat, optimize health and improve your performance in daily life.

Trust me… I learned the hard way.

I have been a personal trainer for over 25 years, and I switched my focus over the past ten years to become a health and nutrition coach – as exercising more wasn’t the answer to improving fat loss.  FAT loss, not weight loss, is a goal for most of us but what works for me to burn fat is going to be different that what works for you.

Athlete

Over the years, I created “The WHOLESTIC Method” elements to help individuals burn fat, improve their health and enhance longevity process.  In order to lose (fat) weight and be healthy we need to not “eat less and exercise more” but rather work on the WHOLE individual via nutrition and lifestyle habits plus running key functional lab tests will help us identify HIDDEN internal sources of chronic stress that may be contributing to weight gain or inability to lose (fat) weight.

The eight elements include:

  1. Nutrition
  2. Exercise
  3. Sleep
  4. Stress Reduction
  5. Movement & Mobility
  6. Digestion & Gut Health
  7. Hydration
  8. Happiness, Play & Gratitude

Here are a few warning signs why your diet is making you gain weight…

  1. Food Sensitivities (MRT or Vibrant Wellness)
  2. Metabolic Type – slow or fast oxidizers, genetics snps, ancestry background
  3. Microbiome Diversity (BiomeFX)

Keep in mind, there is not one perfect DIET for everyone!  There is not a one size fits all approach or one meal plan that everyone should follow to achieve their weight loss goals.  We are all unique bio-individuals with different biochemistry, genetics, ancestry background and lifestyle habits.

What is “Biochemical Individuality”?

Let’s keep it simple.

Is your thumbprint the same as mine?

No.

We are all genetically and biologically unique.

Genetics don’t necessarily create our destiny … but our nutrition and our environment habits change the outcome.  This is called Epigenetics.

The same diet, either it be a low carb, real food, “keto”, “paleo”, “carnivore” or “vegan” plant-based meal plan- we all will have different results.

My opinion- we should not be following a “diet”, but learn how to individualize our eating plan, along with healthy lifestyle habits that improve our longevity, to create an individualized food plan that enhances weight (fat) loss if desired.

When I coach clients to improve their fat loss, health and performance, I do look at their personal health history, nutritional therapy analysis, nutrient deficiencies, genetics, metabolic type, gut dysbiosis, microbiome, hormones and FOOD SENSITIVITIES.  I collect all of these clues to help individualize a program to help a client lose their desired weight – almost unintentionally once we work on removing the inflammatory foods and identifying which foods are best for their unique bio-chemistry individuality and lifestyle.

How do you discover your “perfect diet”?  Let’s learn how to TEST and not Guess with the appropriate lab tests, assessments and lifestyle habits.

Sign #1: Food sensitivities

Solution:  MRT Leap Food Sensitivity Testing

  1. TEST and not GUESS which foods your body has tagged as enemy -then remove those foods as they are a major source and contributor to leaky gut, mucosal damage to the gut wall lining and inflammation in the body.
  • MRT test for example can identify food sensitivities that can “involve both innate and adaptive immune pathways, multiple triggering mechanisms and multiple classes of white blood cells.
  • Pathogenic reactions ultimately lead to the release of proinflammatory and proalgesic mediators from associated white cells with resulting subclinical and clinical inflammatory effects.”- MRT Leap test
  • MRT give insight into inflammation provoking foods and food-chemicals, but more importantly MRT identifies your BEST foods – the foods that form the basis of their LEAP Eating Plan.

If you are eating the WRONG foods for your body –leading irritating and inflaming the gut, and leaky gut (intestinal permeable gut wall lining) with “leaks in your gut” may cause you to gain weight due to inflammation from eating the wrong foods.  The “wrong foods” for you could even be healthy, nutrient dense foods as broccoli and grass-fed beef!  You don’t know unless you test, investigate and correlate the results to create an individualized program to help you burn fat and be healthy on the inside out!

Solution:  Vibrant Zoomer Testing:

  • Vibrant Wellness Food Sensitivity Profile 1 is an array of 95 commonly consumed food antigens which offers very specific antibody-to-antigen recognition.
  • Measures your IgG and IgA sensitivity to food antigens.
  • Testing our IgA antibodies provides us with additional clues about hidden stressors from specific foods that may be causing mucosal damage (gut wall lining).
  • If you suffer from delayed reactions to certain foods- the Vibrant Wellness test uses an antibody-based food sensitivity test
  • Food Sensitivity testing can help prioritize which specific foods are contributing to inflammation and dysfunction and need to be REMOVED
  • We can create a customized diet plan around the person’s specific bio-individual needs with the right clues.
  • The peptides in wheat, namely gluten, can lead to greater intestinal permeability, sometimes called “leaky gut.”
  • Peptides in other foods (dairy, lectins, and corn, for instance) can cause this too, however, and testing for a full spectrum of peptide sensitivities is the most accurate way to detect foods that are inflammatory to each individual, to promote faster healing.
  • An individualized food elimination plan is the only way to make sure that your elimination diet includes foods that heal, and no foods that harm.

Let’s ZOOM in to learn more about your body and how to optimize your health, build your immune system and improve your resiliency here.

Antigenic foods in the western food supply may be the underlying root causes of chronic in-flammatory conditions and diseases.  Vibrant Wellness offers peptide-level testing ‘zooms in’ on the individual peptide fragments of proteins in order to test for the full array of possible reactivity to each of these foods, for the most accurate results when you need to be 100% certain of reactivity or sensitivity to one of those foods, which might be a trigger for common inflammatory symptoms that affect the gastrointestinal, neurological, integumentary (skin), connective tissue/joints, and other body systems.”– https://www.vibrant-wellness.com/food/

Food allergies and sensitivities can have a ripple effect when it comes to weight gain. While the allergy or sensitivity you experience does not directly cause your body to put on extra pounds, the reactions you experience may indirectly lead to weight gain.”

“Chronic inflammation is caused by several diseases and conditions, including insulin resistance, which can lead to weight gain. Insulin regulates the body’s ability to metabolize the food we eat. When the body becomes insulin resistant it isn’t able to properly metabolize foods. This inability is associated with increased weight gain especially around the lower abdomen. This is why eating a healthy diet is essential to disease prevention.

Sign #2:  Riding the Blood Sugar Roller Coaster.

In our Nutritional Therapy Assessment, one of the categories is on blood sugar handling.  The signs and symptoms of blood sugar dysregulation include:

  • Awaken a few hours after falling asleep, hard to get back to sleep
  • Crave sweets
  • Binge or uncontrolled eating
  • Excessive appetite
  • Crave coffee or sugar in the afternoon
  • Sleepy in afternoon
  • Fatigue that is relieved by eating
  • Headache if meals are skipped or delayed
  • Irritable before meals
  • Shaky if meals delayed
  • Family members with diabetes
  • Frequent thirst
  • Frequent urination

Do you struggle with signs of blood sugar regulation?  If so, you may be struggling with weight (FAT) loss because you are stuck on the blood sugar roller coaster ride every day.

How do you get off the blood sugar roller coaster?

First ask yourself if you feel…

  • Are you feeling a lack of feeling “FULL” and satisfied after eating a full meal?
  • Are you hungry a few hours after you eat?
  • Do you experience signs and symptoms of being “hangry,” shaky, nauseous, etc. with low blood sugar, not feeling full (perhaps leptin issues?)
  • Are you having an energy crash after eating “healthy” real food meals (where one hasn’t overeaten)?
  • Do you have cravings for sugary foods?

You may be stuck on the non-stop blood sugar roller coaster- burning sugar or “kindling” for fuel instead of fat or “slow burning logs”.

What does it look like “under the hood” in your body?

Solutions: Take the Metabolic Typing Quiz

  • We can invest on a metabolic efficiency test, take a METABOLIC TYPING DIET quiz (click here to learn more www.mtdiet.com)
  • You can use a “Diet Check Record” to monitor how you FEEL after you eat
  • Are you a FAST OXIDIZER or a SLOW OXIDIZER?

We can determine your “best diet” or your “ideal foods” and personalize your nutrition program by collecting clues and investigating the WHOLE You from the inside out -as with a Metabolic Type Testing Analysis.

The analysis will provide you with a list of foods that are ideal for your metabolic type and provide your ideal with macro-nutrient ratio… then in as a FDN Practitioner (health investigator), we take this information and combine it with your results from your food sensitivity lab test as well as other clues we collect.  We want to eat the right foods that support our body chemistry and keep us in balance- homeostasis.  Food is medicine- and we don’t want to eat foods that are poisonous to our unique body – that would contribute to not being able to lose weight (inflammation!)!

We want to work on WHAT we are eating by discovering the best foods for your body and then fine tune our intake based on how we feel.

We are not only what we eat- but also how we can breakdown, digest and absorb the food we eat to help us be full, energized and satisfied for hours – resulting in eating less and losing weight (in most cases).  The “right” fuel mixture of our macronutrients (carbs/protein/fat), vitamins and minerals needs to be in the right combination to we can convert our food into fuel- energy.

“It is this optimal cellular energy production that allows your cellular engines of metabolism to function the way they are designed to function, both in maximizing metabolic efficiency and in assuring that your food is fully converted to energy and not stored as fat.” – www.metabolictyping.com

Nutrisense
Test your blood glucose and learn what your body needs- and when is the best time to eat -learn more about NutriSense and their CGM here

Solutions:  Measure your blood sugar levels or pulse

Track your blood sugar measurements as with a Continuous Glucose Monitor (NutriSense here)

Solutions:  Check you genetic and ancestry background

I am sure you have taking the 23andME or AncestryDNA test some time in your past, but have you use that raw data to learn more about your own genetics -besides your ancestry background and relatives?

You can upload raw data into programs as DNAFit and really go deep with STRATGENE from Seeking Health/Dr. Ben Lynch.

Remember to TEST and NOT GUESS if you want to burn fat, get healthy and perform your best in life!

Solutions:  Become Metabolic Flexible?

Not to get too off topic and dive too deep but are you burning fat as your go to fuel tank and burning carbs as your back up fuel tank?

Our goal is to improve our Metabolic Flexibility:

The definition of Metabolic flexibilityis the capacity for the organism to adapt fuel oxidation to fuel availability. The inability to modify fuel oxidation in response to changes in nutrient availability has been implicated in the accumulation of intramyocellular lipid and insulin resistance.  The metabolic flexibility assessed by the ability to switch from fat to carbohydrate oxidation”

Are you burning kindling or logs for your main fuel source? Find out here.

– learn more at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2584808/

We should be burning fat as our main fuel source – so what you eat, when you eat, how you eat and why you eat impacts your ability to be a fat burner (and get off the blood sugar ride).

Do you need a reset and reboot to “flip the switch” to become a fat burner and get off the blood sugar roller coaster?  Learn more on my podcast “The Low Carb Athlete” and find free eBooks on www.debbiepotts.net

Solution:  Measure your blood sugar

Tip:  Test and Not Guess your blood sugar, as well as how your body responds to food.

You can test your blood sugar with devices as Keto Mojo as here.

If you want to really test how food impacts your blood sugar- then you can wear a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) by companies as NutriSense.
Nutrisenseis a technology company with a mission to provide individuals with relevant and meaningful data about their health in real-time, allowing for early detection of metabolic problems, prevention of avoidable chronic conditions, and the ability to truly optimize health and lifespan. By utilizing Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) technology, data analytics, and guidance from experts, users can meaningfully answer and address questions such as, “what should I eat?, “what behaviors do I need to change?”, and “how do I change them?” No more one-size-fits-all nutrition or yo-yo dieting; personalized nutrition and instant feedback is here – at your fingertips.”

Why does your Blood Sugar level matter when trying to lose weight?

1. Traditional methods for disease prevention are failing Normal laboratory measures, such as fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1c, miss the bigger picture and often fail to catch early metabolic issues. The CGM coupled with NutriSense software allows you to see problems early and pinpoint exactly where the issue lies.

2. Abnormal glucose levels are early warning signs for many chronic conditions Glucose is our primary metabolite for energy and when this normally tightly controlled system starts to go awry, every component of the body is affected. The progression leads to oxidative damage, inflammation, blood vessel damage, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, prediabetes, and eventually chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and chronic kidney disease.

3. Chronic conditions are prevalent, but early detection and intervention is key One in 3 people in the United States have pre-diabetes, and 90% aren’t aware. Of these, 70% will eventually become diabetic, when it may already be too late for simple intervention.Studies show that 80% of incidents of heart disease, stroke, and type II diabetes could be prevented or delayed by addressing lifestyle factors like diet and exercise. Only 12% of the American population is considered metabolically healthy.

4. NutriSense technology provides insight into a personalized diet Our bodies are complex and individual, with greatly varied glycemic responses to the same foods. Rather than prescribe any one diet, we work with the user’s data to optimize their dietary choices based on their real-time glucose responses to the foods they eat.

5. Continuous real-time data is vital to implement sustainable lifestyle change
Studies show that only 20% of dieters can maintain long-term sustainable change. Preventative health is difficult to implement because there is a disconnect between our actions (saying no to dessert) and their long-term outcomes (optimal metabolic health). Real-time feedback provides a direct window into the body’s metabolism, highlighting the short-term benefits of healthy choices and making them easier to sustain.

Sign #3:  Microbiome Dysbiosis and Imbalance in Diversity.

Solutions:

  1. Test and not guess about your microbiome diversity as with Microbiome Lab’s BiomeFx lab test (learn more here)
  2. Microbiome Diversity (BiomeFx) stool test looks at Keystone Species.
    • Akkermansia muciniphila is closely tied to metabolism, so if that beneficial microbe is too low (which is very common), then weight loss, specifically fat loss would likely be rather difficult.
    • Firmicutes: Bacteroidetes ratio on the test will also provide some clues for those struggling to lose weight.
  3. SCFA Production (BiomeFx)
    • Butyrate is the most popular short-chain fatty acid and soothes the intestinal wall from any inflammation, feeds intestinal cells, and enhances insulin sensitivity.
    • Reducing inflammation and correcting insulin resistance can play a powerful role in healthy and sustainable weight loss.
  4. Methane Production (BiomeFx)
    • High levels of methane in the gut can slow down the current (peristalsis) that moves food through the GI tract at an appropriate pace.
    • When you slow down the current too much, this can lead to higher calorie extraction from meals, which can make it much more difficult to lose weight.
    • The presence of methane in the gut is notably in higher in obese individuals.

BONUS TIP:  Sweat More … and RELAX more often!

Now there is not any magic weight loss/fat loss pill but there are tricks to help improve your ability to lose weight – as spending time in an infrared sauna!  I have used for the past two years, Sunlighten Infrared Sauna in my house and I love it to help me not only unplug, slow down and sweat out inflammation (toxins).

A sauna, as Sunlighten, heats up your core temperature to induce sweating, increases blood flow and actually increases your heart rate- which may help you lose weight.  I explain the benefits of the Sunlighten to my clients as “the infrared heats you up from the inside out like a microwave” and once you start sweating (if you relax and adapt) then you start to feel (and see) the benefits.  By elevating our core temperature with the near, mid and far infrared wavelength, we can help burn extra calories with the activation of our cardiovascular system and perhaps teach the body to adapt to stress (most of us seem to be “sympathetic dominant”).  Being able to sit in the Sunlighten sauna is a challenge for people – which is a big red flag to me as a coach that they are “running from a lion” and “living life as a race’ each day.

Remember- chronic stress impacts our ability burn fat as every stress response is a blood sugar response (getting stuck on a roller coaster ride)

I believe the actual experience in the Sunlighten full infrared sauna helps me lose weight and improve my health from the inside out for various personal reasons as helping me shift into the parasympathetic “PNS” nervous system, reducing inflammation from exercise and improves my sleep.  We all could benefit from slowing down and being more present in life- which will help us digest our food, sleep, recover, repair, heal, rebuild and more which all contribute to weight/fat loss.

“An infrared sauna heats your body from the inside out, which allows you to stay in the sauna longer and increases your heart rate. Infrared sauna uses results in more calories burned in a shorter period of time. Furthermore, Solocarbon infrared heat allows for most of the far infrared wavelength to be near 9.4 microns, which is the level at which the human body absorbs infrared energy. This is also the frequency at which a water molecule resonates or vibrates. This vibration causes a release of cellular toxins. This optimal micron output also allows for deeper penetration of far infrared heat, which improves weight loss efforts.”

Chronic Stress Response & Stress Hormones

“Distress of any kind contributes to loss of homeostasis, “Metabolic Chaos®”, dysfunction This weakened state of health, left unchecked, leads to symptoms downstream. Treating symptoms only leads to worsening of the underlying dis-ease state. Symptoms may be far removed from the causal factors or stressors found upstream” ~ Reed Davis

THE FDN Practitioner Guide:  Stress, Cortisol and Weight Gain

  • Cortisol stimulates the liver to increase blood glucose levels, which causes AGE formation, oxidative stress, and inflammation
  • Cortisol inhibits protein synthesis and therefore inhibits muscle growth
  • Cortisol increases protein breakdown in skeletal muscle
  • Can lead to a decrease in metabolic rate
  • Cortisol negatively impacts thyroid hormone
  • Can decrease metabolic rate and calorie burning ability
  • Low cortisol causes symptoms such as chronic fatigue, muscle
  • weakness, irritability, depression, and increased pain perception
  • Reduces willpower to exercise, feeling sore for longer after exercise, and seeking comfort foods to combat mood
  • Low cortisol also leads to excessive blood sugar swings, issues with insulin, testosterone, and inflammation

What is the solution to lose weight?

Get a Personalized Nutrition Plan!

Focus on sustainability, listening to your unique body and making the right choices.  We should be taking ownership for our health and not excepting a magic pill or quick fix to lose weight.  Learn what to eat for your bio-individuality.

We start with the foundations while we investigate a little deeper with functional lab testing

As we learn in Nutritional Therapy:

  • NUTRITION:  How to eat a properly prepared, nutrient-dense, whole foods diet.
  • DIGESTION:  Why you are not just what you eat, but what you actually absorb.
  • BLOOD SUGAR:  How to balance blood sugar and increase energy.
  • DIETARY FATS:  Why you need healthy fats and cholesterol in your diet.
  • MINERALS:  The critical roles of minerals and how to get more in your diet.
  • HYDRATION:  Why water is the most important nutrient and how-to best hydrate.

As FDN Practitioners, we investigate what is “under the hood” by identifying the external and hidden CHRONIC stressors that may contribute or be a result of weight gain or the inability to lose weight.  We look for

From my own personal experience and journey, I have learned three key solutions-

1.         Chronic stress impacts the WHOLE you as a domino effect of internal breakdown and burnout results in “METABOLIC CHAOS®”

2.         We are WHAT we eat but also HOW, WHEN and WHY we eat!  As digestion starts north in the brain!

3.         LESS is sometime MORE… there is the “GOLDILOCKS Effect” for each of us as N = 1

With the right type of support and accountability are obviously two key elements to help you improve your weight loss (and health!) but even more importantly are the 3 main areas that I focus on with every client. In our work together we should focus on …

  1. Figuring out what foods are right for your body so it can function at its potential
  • Uncovering hidden healing opportunities within the hormone, immune, digestion and detoxification system using functional lab testing so we can restore balance to your body
  • Learn a model of self-care so you’ll know how to tune into your body at any time to give it exactly what it needs to continue improving or maintaining your health.

What choices can you make starting today to improve your fat loss, health and longevity?

How are you going to take action today on your weight loss and transformational journey now?

What am I doing for my own self experiment to be the best version of myself, as well feel my best, look my best and perform my best as I age?

I am trying out NutriSense for the next 30-days myself, along with MRT food sensitivity test, Vibrant Wellness Wheat Zoomer then combine the results with my BiomeFX results, ancestry background (Northern European) and DNAFit Nutrition Report.  We need to practice what we preach as we are all an experiment of one… N = 1 to personalize your nutrition to help burn fat, optimize your health and improve your aging process.
