How would you describe yourself today?
Who do you want to be in the FUTURE?
What is your passion and purpose that you are following?
This month I am doing an online program to improve my future self, lead by Dr. Benjamin Hardy, author of “Personality isn’t Permanent” (another book to read!).
You have a choice on who you want to be.
What is the story you tell yourself?
“You own your future and who you become”- Dr. Hardy
Dr. Hardy teaches that we have a CHOICE in who we want to become – what type of person do you want to be in the future? He talks about our IDENTITY and how our identify defines and describes ourselves- it is the story we tell ourselves and what drives our personality.
Our IDENTITY according to Dr. Hardy:
- shapes our behavior
- our behavoir, over time, is our personality
- what every we IMAGINE our future to be, is the “thing” that is shaping our current identity.
- Our future is what drives how we see ourself today… not our past.
Do you realize that your personality is not the same as it was – and it is different than it will be in the future?
Let’s stop believing that we are the way we are, and we are not able to change our personality, behavior and view of ourselves.
My life previous to my “internal breakdown and burnout” that onbviously stared around March 2013 is drastically different than my past self in 2012-2001 when I was competiting at a high level as a top age group triathlete in Ironman distance triathlons, marathons, 50k trail running and long distance cycling events.
That was me then… my past self. My current self is even more different than the past eight years.
We have a CHOICE to be health and a CHOICE to take ownership on how we make our own choices.
As I say to clients… we have a choice to turn off our Wi-Fi at night and electronic devices. We have a choice to stop eating three hours before bed. We have a choice to read a book before bed instead of television, negative news, or social media.
We also have a CHOICE in creating WHO we want to become in the future. That future could be in the next few months or years.
We are the one who dictates our history and future self. Everything in my past is benefiting to where I am today- I learned a lot from my experiences, especially the past eight years after I was forced to the sidelines and had to switch my mindset in more ways than one.
I have overcome my past and I am going to become better for that past experiences. We can turn every experience into a different attitude or perspective- “I am going to become better because of that experience”.

I am doing this great program called “30 Day Create your Future Self” online or click here.
“The future is the thing shaping your identify. Your identify drives your personality”.
Here are some take away from the homework on Day Six of the program…
- Do you have a fixed mindset of yourself?
- Do you take ownership of your past?
- Do you dictate, view and frame your past experiences?
- Do you view everything in your past as this is “what happened to me” versus this is “what happened for me and I am going to be a better person for that experience”?
What is your prospection on your future?
- The future shapes our identify.
- Our identify shapes our future.
Today, based on my past experiences and life journey, I have followed my purpose. Now I help driven, ambitious, high performing individuals, who are stuck doing all the right “things”, get their body and vibrant self-back again, by getting their hands on functional lab tests and investigate what is actually going on “under the hood”.
We know our past personality is different than who we are today. For example, me ten years ago in 2010 is very different person that the me in 2020. I was definitely forced to stop racing as my burned out and broken body systems put me on the side lines …but what is I didn’t get broken in March 2013? What if I continued to push myself non-stop every day burning the candles at both ends and “living life a race”? I have always been a driven and ambitious individual, but the past me had to change and due to the past life experience, I now am a different type of driven and ambitious individual since I learned how to change my perspective of life and fast paced lifestyle.
My current self was forced to change and evolve to a new me again in 2020, as we were all forced to stay home and hopefully find a new sense of purpose -instead of filling in hours of new free time on the television and electronic devices. My husband Neal and I changed our life as we knew it, pre-Covid, to a new hometown and new home with new jobs that we could do online anywhere in the country (as long as we were near an airport and with good Wi-Fi).
In the “30-day to my Future Self” program I am doing right now- we learn that we have the choice and power to overcome our past and we are not stuck as the person. We should be more grateful for what our past experiences has taught us -life lessons and find the GIFT from every experience (good and bad).
Once again… remember our “future is to think shaping your identity, and that your identity is the thing that drives your personality. Our Personality Isn’t Permanent.”
Why don’t we choose to be HEALTHY and take ownership of our HEALTH instead of live in fear or believe we are who we are?
Maybe we begin to change our negative experiences into learning opportunities. We begin to take ownership of our PAST self and past experiences – then change our memory of those negative experiences and switch into positive learning experiences. We can’t be stuck in the mindset that “we are the way we are” but rather “what is the learning opportunity or gift from the experience that will help me grow and develop into a better person in the future”?
Who do I want to be in 3, 5 or 10 years?
What is my FUTURE self-going to be like for me? I can choose who I want to be in the FUTURE by changing my mindset and view of myself TODAY by becoming more conscious of who I was, who I am and who I want to be in the future.
I believe that everything happens for a reason.
If we view every experience as an amazing gift and benefit towards shaping our FUTURE SELF.
Now the main reason I wrote my personal history and journey into a book published on Amazon (LIFE IS NOT A RACE), is to help myself find the WHY in my history… “why me” and “why was I struggling all alone”… “why could no one help me get my body and vibrant self-back again”. I wanted to get my fit, strong, athletic body back again but no one seemed to be able to help ME.
Instead of blaming others and playing the “why me” song… I learned over the past eight years that my past experiences helped me defined my purpose and who I am today. I changed my coaching business to focus on my WHY as my past experiences gave me a gift to become a health coach to help other driven, ambitious individuals who are struggling as I was since 2013 for years.
My past experiences shaped me to become my current self – who I want to be today. Now it is the time to define my current self and start working on my future self for the next year. One year ago, I closed my boutique “all in one” fitness studio in Bellevue, WA since it was part of what exhausted me financially, mentally and spiritually. I was creating my future self-last year as I completed the FDN Practitioner course to follow my purpose, mission and passion.
Who do I want to be next? Who is the future version of Debbie Potts?
- I am confident and clear in my purpose now that I see my future self.
- I will be successful as a health coach to help other driven and ambitious high performers.
- I will create impact in clients lives who are struggling as I was in the past to get results.
In the lesson today we are asked “what is the outcome you are trying to create?”
Lesson learned… whatever that outcome you are trying to produce or create, because whatever that outcome is, that is the thing driving your behavior. All behavior is driven by the future.”
“You are being driven by your view of the future; your identity is being driven by your view of the future.”
“Your identity is how you see yourself. It’s how you define yourself.”
Now take some time to sit outside or in a comfortable chair to write down how you would define your FUTURE SELF?
- We need to look at our present behavior
- Look at your weekly behavior
- Look at what you are working towards.
I always like the saying… “are you trying to survive the day or are you striving the thrive each day?”
Are you starting your Monday and just trying to survive until Friday evening?
Think about this as you reflect on yourself, your identity and who you want to be in the future…
“Whatever we view of our future is that thing driving our behavior” – 30 days to your Future Self.
Remember- your former self is a different person than who you are today.
My future self is a different person that I am today.
Who do you want to be in the Future?
I am working on who I want to be in 2021- next year!
I want to be a successful health coach that create impact in our world by helping other driven, ambitious high performing individuals, who are stuck trying to do all the “right” things, get their body and vibrant self-back again by getting their hands on functional lab tests and assessments to help investigate what is actually going on under the hood.
It has taken me almost eight years to figure out that I need/want to follow my purpose to help others feel their best self and live their best life.
- What is your outcome?
- What is consuming you identify?
- How to make your present better?
- What is the current outcome you are seeking?
- What is driving my behavior?
My former self is a different person that has given me gifts to create my FUTURE self. Now my desired outcome is to be the best health coach to those clients as myself.
What is consuming my identify of my future self?
To continue my education in Nutritional Therapy and Functional Medicine, as well as personal development to help be the best coach as I strive to become to my clients.
I am taking time out today and each day to journal.
Today’s assignment to write about what is the future I am currently pursuing… and what future I really want to focus on?
I want to work with other like-minded individuals to be their referral for Health (RE) Building Coaching services as my friends Erin Carson (EC Fit), Todd Durkin (TD Enterprises) and Robin Switzer of Keto Q1 Productions.

Tomorrow’s homework is…
DAY 5:
“Key Insight: Your future self is something you must design and become. That is your responsibility. Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Will you take the time to imagine your future self, and use your imagined future self as the basis for your identity and behavior? You can…”
