Episode #316 on What is Keto?

Keto conversation today as Debbie reviews many New Years Fat Loss blogs in 2020… keto is still effective and popular for most people!  Robb Wolf shared his thoughts in a recent blog post that was interesting- coming from the main founder of “PALEO” for the Crossfit world.

  • Reducing carb intake reduces blood sugar levels
  • Less blood sugar means your pancreas releases less insulin—the hormone responsible for storing blood sugar as fat or glycogen
  • Low insulin signals your liver to beta-oxidize (burn) fatty acids for ketone production
  • The goal is to get you running on fat for fuel (and the ketones produced from fat) instead of sugar/glucose/carbs.
  • Fasting, by the way, has a similar metabolic effect.
  • Naturally, following a low-carb food plan and becoming fat adapted is a form of a “fasting mimicking diet”.
  • Keto is basically paleo without the healthy carbs.   EAT REAL FOOD TO BALANCE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR!
  • You can have meat, healthy fats (like olive oil and coconut oil), nuts, leafy greens, small portions of berries, and dairy if tolerated.
  • Avoid high-carb foods like rice, sweet potatoes, grains, and honey.
  • Keto has become a popular weight loss diet, but ketosis has other benefits too.

WHY GO KETO?

  • The reset diets I’ve recommended in both of his books (The Paleo SolutionWired To Eat) used a moderate to high protein, carb restricted, appropriate fat approach.
  • Although not strictly a “keto” plan, Rob suspects most folks enter ketosis while following those guidelines.
  • Low-carb diets trigger unique hormonal changes that prevent overeating (at least in some folks).
  • Ketones have unique therapeutic benefits.
