What is keto? I know you have heard about it but do you really know what it is all about?  I find most people hear the new hot word “keto” as well as Intermittent fasting but they don’t know really what it is all about. Ketosis is a great way to kick start your fat burning engine and get off the blood sugar roller coaster, hormone imbalances, blood sugar dysregulation, gut dysbioisis and more!

Ketosis is when the body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy- a by product of breaking down fat for fuel.  When you eat a high carbohydrate diet- you will burn glucose for fuel and increase your insulin (fat storing) hormones if your blood sugar is too high which often leads to low blood sugar (then you are on the blood sugar roller coaster).

Instead of depending on fast burning “kindling” or sugar/glucose for fuel- we should be (and designed to be) slow burning “Dura-Flame logs” for fuel – fat.  As we say at my studio, eat fat to burn fat, eat sugar to get fat.  Whether you are following a primal paleo diet, ketogenic diet, low-carb diet or LCHF (low-carb/high-fat diet)- the main goal is to eat real nutrient dense whole foods that balance the blood sugar levels in order to avoid insulin surges.  Ketones are a by-product of burning fat in the liver.Keto Colllection | Dr Axe Ancient Nutrition Supplements

Remember all the guidelines that taught us to eat mostly carbs (picture the food pyramid!) and thought you could stay lean if you ate all the non-fat breads, rice, pastas and cereals that you wanted?  We were brainwashed that eating fat would make us gain weight as protein and carbohydrates both contain only 4 calories per gram while fat provides 9 calories per gram.   We also thought eating over eating 3500 extra calories over our basal metabolic rate would creating one pound of weight gained.  As I shared my personal story with adrenal exhaustion in my book LIFE IS NOT A RACE (Amazon), I started to be curious about these “guidelines” back in 2001 when I started training for long distance cycling events, marathons and Ironman Triathlons.  If I burned 5000 calories in a training day while eating healthy banana, bagel and orange juice for my morning breakfast – why didn’t I lose any weight?  Hmmmm.  Well it tells you a lot of why I am doing what I am doing today- my purpose, passion and how I am creating impact in our society with The WHOLESTIC Method program!

That is why eating low-carb/high fat (LCHF) and being metabolically efficient makes sense to me.  I don’t believe that there is any type of “one size fits all” diet plan – BUT if you are eating nutrient dense whole foods that keep your blood sugar balanced then you should be burning fat.  Of course, as per our podcasts, it always DEPENDS.  If you are rushing through your meal, multi-tasking, not chewing your food, eating stressed and living each day as a race you are still going to struggle losing weight.  Getting into Ketosis or showing .5 ketones on your Keto Mojo as well as blood glucose measurement of 70-90 is important as well as intermittent fasting and following the tips in The WHOLESTIC Method Manual… but CHRONIC STRESS will put a damper on any successful attempt to burn fat and test for ketones (in my experience!).  One part of the puzzle is getting off the blood sugar roller coaster first.  You also need to improve stress levels, focus, be present and be able to digest your food (HCL betaine, digestiive enzyme, and fat digestion aids often are needed!).

If you eat a high carbohydrate food plan, you will increase glucose levels and store more body fat as the liver and muscles only store so much glycogen- the rest gets converted and stored into fat cells!  So eating high healthy fat diet doesn’t mean you are going to get FAT but actually will curb your appetite and make you feel full for hours so you end up eating less!  Ketones are produced when the liver breaks down fat for fuel..they are not evil as some people think and confuse with a serious diabetic risk of going into keto acidosis.

Intermittent fasting becomes easy when your meal during your eating window is “LCHF”.  While you are fasting, your body will go to fat stores for fuel instead of searching for glucose.  Your brain can use ketones for fuel as well as glucose so you may feel more focused and work with improved concentration!  That is why “feast or famine” is a natural process based on our ancestors- they would eat when they could then rest until the next meal allowing the body to digest their meal properly and burn fat (slow burning Duraflame log) until the next meal arrived (or was hunted!).   When we are eating LCHF and implementing Intermittent Fasting, we are never starving nor eating a low-calorie diet, unless doing a supervised water or liquid fast as needed.  We are starving the body of carbohydrates when striving for ketosis.

Ketosis is a state of the body in which glucose levels (from carbohydrates) are drastically reduced and the body is forced to find another source of fuel.  Fat is the body’s second preferred source of energy when carbohydrates are not easily available.  When your body burns fat instead of glucose, it produces a substance called ketones. Once ketone levels reach a certain point (.o5-3 mmol), you enter ketosis- which usually results in quick and consistent weight loss.  -Dr. Axe

High ketone levels are indicated by a measurement above 3.0 mmol/L of ketones. 1.6 to 2.9 mmol/L for optimal ketone levels and 0.5 mmol/L indicate very low levels of ketone in the blood.It should be noted however that high ketone levels are a big medical risk especially if one is not leading a ketogenic lifestyle. This is usually an indication of type 1 diabetes and one is advised to see a doctor if the reading on the blood ketone meter exceeds 3.0 mmol/L. -https://keto-mojo.com
