The HRV & Gut Repair ConnectionDo you measure your Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in the mornings? I use my OURA ring now to measure my HRV as it measures overnight while I am sleeping. Recently, I have seen a huge increase (a positive change) in my HRV score. I attribute this increase to my improvement of my gut health as we know HRV is a measurement of our vagal tone – vagal nerve and is the gut-brain connector. I started adding in various supplements and lifestyle habits this past year to improve my health – including Kion Colostrum in the morning and night time (take on an empty stomach and let absorb in your mouth).

“Colostrum bovinum has been reported to positively influence gut status in both human and animal studies [20]. Well-established causes of these effects include participation in restoring the composition of the intestinal microbiome and support of the healing of damaged mucosa [21,22,23].Apr 8, 2017

“Both animal and human studies show that bovine colostrum may stimulate the growth of intestinal cells, strengthen the gut wall, and prevent intestinal permeability, a condition that causes particles from your gut to leak to the rest of your body ( 18 , 19 , 20 ).Feb 27, 2019″

What Is Colostrum?
“Colostrum, also known as “first milk,” is produced in the mammary glands of females just prior to giving birth (and for the first few days after giving birth) and serves as a concentrated source of proteins, growth factors, and antibodies that are essential for the early development of newborns.”
here’s a brief description of the important components of colostrum mentioned that are worth paying closer attention to – a veritable host of super-nutrients you’d be hard-pressed to find in any other compound found in nature (I’ve found nothing besides colostrum that contains all of the below):
- Cytokines: Part of your systemic immune system. These hormones keep communication between immune cells active. (No communication means low immunity, frequent sickness, and susceptibility to illness!)
- Growth Factors: (IGF-I, IGF-II, EGF) As the name implies, growth factors assist with the maintenance and growth of certain body tissues, including muscle and the gastrointestinal lining.
- Lactoferrin: Lactoferrin assists with iron absorption and is a crucial part of your immune defense system.
- Growth Hormone: Growth Hormone (GH) works individually as well as together with the other growth factors in colostrum to aid in the growth and function of gastrointestinal tissues, muscle, and more.
- Immunoglobulins: (IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, IgM) Immunoglobulins are small proteins that are used by your immune system to seek out and destroy foreign antigens (invaders).
- Proline-Rich Polypeptides (PRPs): Important immune system regulators, PRPs encourage the growth of white blood cells, may restore the balance in cellular immune functions and defend against oxidative stress, and support brain health.
As you can see, colostrum is teeming with benefits for everything from your immune system to your muscles. This is why colostrum’s properties have been revered for thousands of years across many cultures. In ancient Chinese medicine, it was regarded as a potent health tonic.

I was curious to my own N = 1 experiment and correlation of my HRV improvements to my gut health improvements. I started noticing the HRV scores of my VIP BG health coaching clients to improve with their health rebuilding protocol. Then I started to dive down another rabbit hole… is there any research connecting gut health improvements with HRV improvements? Here is one study on connecting HRV and Gut Repair…“IBD was strongly associated with an overall decrease in HRV, indicating substantially decreased ANS activity. Furthermore, the parasympathetic nerve displayed a stronger inverse association with ANS activity than the sympathetic nerve, indicating ANS dysfunction in patients with IBD.”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7710256/
Vagus Nerve as Modulator of Intestinal Immune Homeostasis
The gastrointestinal tract is constantly confronted with food antigens, possible pathogens, and symbiotic intestinal microbiota that present a risk factor for intestinal inflammation (63). It is highly innervated by vagal fibers that connect the CNS with the intestinal immune system, making vagus a major component, the neuroendocrine-immune axis. This axis is involved in coordinated neural, behavioral, and endocrine responses, important for the first-line defense against inflammation (64).
“The interaction between the gut and the brain is based on a complex system that includes not only neural but also endocrine, immune, and humoral links. The vagus nerve is an essential part of the brain–gut axis and plays an important role in the modulation of inflammation, the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis, and the regulation of food intake, satiety, and energy homeostasis. An interaction between nutrition and the vagus nerve is well known, and vagal tone can influence food intake and weight gain. Moreover, the vagus nerve plays an important role in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders, obesity as well as other stress-induced and inflammatory diseases. Vagus nerve stimulation and several meditation techniques demonstrate that modulating the vagus nerve has a therapeutic effect, mainly due to its relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties.” https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyt.2018.00044/full
