UNDERSTANDING GENEITICS by DNAFit:
What is a GENE?
- A gene is a segment of the DNA molecule that contains the instructions for how, when and where your body makes each of the thousands of proteins required for keeping us alive
- Each gene is comprised of a combination of the letter A, T, C and G
- Each gene combines combine these “letters” to “spell out the words” that specify which amino acid is needed for each step when making the proteins required for our body to develop and function
What are GENE POLYMORPHISMS?
- This is how we are all unique individuals as the small differences in our DNA makes us who we are!
- Gene Polymorphisms are slight changes in our genetic code that are present in at least 1% of the population
- One genetic letter as “A”, “T”, “C” or “G” may be replaced by another letter which can lead to different processes in the body
- SNP is when a change affects only one genetic letter = single nucleotide polymorphism. The SNP’s listed in our DNAFit reports and other genetic test reports while show up in the “allele” result for each gene.
What is NUTRIGENETICS?
- The study of the effects of our individual genetic variations in response to our diet, exercise and lifestyle – which results in our genes being expressed in a different way!
- We can determine an individualized plan based on all of the lifestyle, Nutritional Therapy Functional Evaluation, assessments as well as our DNAFit genetic reports = The WHOLESTIC Method Coaching Program!
- Let’s create your specific journey towards longevity and optimal health together!
What is EPIGENETICS?
- “Is the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself” Oxford Dictionary
- “Epigenetics is the study, in the field of genetics, of cellular and physiological phenotypic trait variations that are caused by external or environmental factors that switch genes on and off and affect how cells read genes instead of being caused by changes in the DNA sequence. Hence, epigenetic research seeks to describe dynamic alterations in the transcriptional potential of a cell.” wikipedia.org
- “Epigenetics is the study of heritable phenotype changes that do not involve alterations in the DNA sequence. The Greek prefix epi- (ἐπι-“over, outside of, around”) in epigenetics implies features that are “on top of” or “in addition to” the traditional genetic basis for inheritance.”- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epigenetics
- “Epigenetics is the study of cellular and physiological traits that could be inherited but are not caused by actual changes to our DNA, or genetic code. Epigenetics refers to natural control mechanisms that influence gene expression.” –https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/kimmel_cancer_center/research_clinical_trials/research/cancer_biology/epigenetics/index.html
Epigenetics has transformed the way we think about our genomes. Our genes are not our destiny …how we life our life makes a different on our genes.
DNAFit Nutrition & Exercise Report
- DNA analysis reports
- Selection of key genes associated with diet, nutrition and weight management
- The reports will help us determine if you need to make modifications in your food plan and lifestyle- as well as exercise plan in our other reports.
- By identifying genetic traits, we can combine our coaching methods to create the ideal exercise, diet and lifestyle recommendations as well as training schedule (coming next!).
- We use our genetic analysis, profile and reports as just another factor that influences our individual health to train The WHOLE Athlete- not just part of you or treating symptoms.
- Integrated DNA as an additional tool to coach individuals – creating The WHOLE Athlete
- As a coach, I implement the DNAFit results into The WHOLESTIC Method personalize coaching program to guide clients towards burning fat, optimizing their health from the inside out at a cellular level and improving their performance based on their genetic SNPs, Nutritional Therapy assessment and evaluation as well as lifestyle habits
WE ARE ALL UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS… THERE IS NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL APPROACH!
“Your genes cannot change, but your lifestyle can.” – DNAFit
Nutrition Report includes: Genetic analysis to help determine your
- Optimal diet type
- Carbohydrate and saturated fat sensitivity
- Detoxification ability (Phase I and Phase II)
- Anti-oxidant requirements
- Personal vitamin and micronutrient need
- Salt, alcohol and caffeine sensitivity
- Lactose intolerance
- Celiac predisposition
- Nutrient Overview- combined with Nutritional Therapy Assessment and Evaluation
DNAFit Exercise Report: a selection of genes that are associated with health and fitness
- Individual results are based on genetic science, role of genetics for personal well-being and our athletic potential
- The DNAFit exercise report provides insight and knowledge to help determine the optimal health and fitness training plan based on your goals, genetics and longevity.
- The DNAFit Premium Report: based on DNA results and unique scientific perspective into the following key areas:
- Endurance and Power Profile: our body’s response to key genes associated to power or endurance potential. This doesn’t tell us which sport to participate or compete in but rather HOW to best train for your body and whichever personal fitness goal/event you may have planned in the future.
- Aerobic Potential: VO2 Max is a common marker for endurance potential. The DNAFit report will help us understand our genetic VO2 Max potential
- Post-Exercise Recovery: a combination of genes analyzed will help us understand our natural recovery speed from our training/exercise sessions as well as help us create an individualized training plan with the recovery time in between training.
- Recovery Nutrition: we can take a combination of genetic markers to determine our vitamin and micronutrient need as well as help develop a nutrition program to enhance recovery post workouts.
- Injury Risk: as you may know already- some people are more genetically prone to injury than another (not including accidents!). we can use genetics to help identify our risk for injuries.
- A full genotype breakdown report is included in the DNAFit program- a full breakdown of each gene tested and our individual allele response to that gene plus the effect that your specific allele response is associated with for “endurance/power profile” and the “post exercise recovery and injury risk” reports.
