As a fitness professional, small business owner, fitness trainer and coach, I strive to continue to grow professionally as well as personally. We all need mentors and peer groups to learn from, to inspire and to help make impact in our own network. Last October I participated in the amazing and inspirational Todd Durkin for his 3.5 Mentorship in San Diego, then in July I joined the Todd Durkin Mastermind group with twenty other inspirational fitness entrepreneurs. We continually inspire each other to set goals, be accountable, take action and make an impact in our fitness industry. Each week I am motivated to “do better” in my fitness studio as an owner, leader, trainer, coach, athlete, spouse, friend and daughter.
Since the mentorship last October 2011, I met Sean Croxton who owns the “Underground Wellness” website and podcasts. I have been hooked on nutritional, fitness and sports performance podcasts. Along this new educational journey, I connected with many other leaders in the fitness nutrition podcast community including Jon Smith of “Garden Variety Triathlete” and Ben Greenfield of “Ben Greenfield Fitness”. I also started learning more, and became fascinated, of low carb eating and fueling for athletes. “Ask the Low Carb Doctors” with Jimmy Moore and other podcasters talk a lot about eating more fat and less processed carbs for athletes as well as living. This concept hit home with me.
I have experimented the past year with cutting back on refined grains and dairy then adding more healthy fats. For most my life, my food plan focused on primarily starchy carbs and non-fat foods. I realized why carbs never provided the sense of satiety and left me wanting to eat more. The high carb food plan also created insulin spikes and headaches even after eating an apple. My new eating plan with mostly plants, nuts, seeds, coconut and avocado for meals has taught me how much of a “carb addict” I have been most my life and how sugar cravings disappeared by adding healthy fats that were always thought as “evil” foods. Fat free, low fat, sugar free and gluten free foods are often processed and fill with chemical fillers.
As 2012 comes towards an end, I have decided to sign up to be trained by Ben Greenfield, M.S. as a “Superhuman Coach” in the next twelve months. This new journey will further educate me on clean eating fuel for athletes and maximize performance through proper coaching. Now I have two mastermind groups to grow, learn and be inspired from in the future… Todd Durkin’s Masterminders and Ben Greenfield’s “Superhuman Coaches”.
