Dr. Amy Myers always has so much information on her website and blog posts that I wanted to share what I have learned from her as well as other practitioners over the years about LEAKY GUT.
We have been hearing the last few years the term “LEAKY GUT” in the health and wellness industry. What is a “leak” in our gut do to us and how do we fix the leak in our gut? Well, your gut wall lining is like the wall surrounding the castle – the barrier between what is in your gut and what is in the bloodstream outside of the gut. If the thin, delicate gut wall gets irritated, inflamed and destructed in anyways – it results in little escape “holes” for undigested food particles that are supposed to stay in the digestive tract to sneak off into the unknown world outside of its “castle”. The result of undigested food particles entering the bloodstream gets tagged as foreigners and enemies…leading to a host of health symptoms including food sensitivities and inflammation.
The main function of the cells in the gut wall lining is to protect the gut – the army lines up the gut wall lining creating tight junctions – finger-like projections. The “army” can get broken up by irritants as the protein in gluten called zonulin but also other factors as infections, toxins, and of course STRESS can cause the protective barriers of the gut wall lining to become irritated and break apart. This results in creating a “leak” in your gut wall lining allowing “items” to leak out of the digestive system into the outside “world” -the bloodstream. Now common foods that are maldigested and escaped into the bloodstream in the “outside world” now are tagged as enemies. The immune system responds to these “invaders” by creating a “war”.
The main causes of leaky gut include:
- Inflammatory foods like gluten, commercial dairy, soy, eggs, and toxic processed foods.
- excess sugar and alcohol
- infections as candida, parasites and small intestinal overgrowth (SIBO) in the intestines
- toxins from medications as steroids, anti-inflammatory, antibiotics, acid-reducing drugs, medications as Advil and Motrin
- exposure to environmental toxins as mercury, pesticides, and BPA from plastics
- excessive chronic stress
