- Parasympathetic Nervous System: rest, digest, repair and detoxification
- Sympathetic Nervous System: fight or flight …or “run from a lion”
Ideally, we naturally switch back and forth between both nervous systems. A healthy nervous system is to have variance and resilient nervous system. Instead, due to the chronic busy-ness, accumulation of stressors, constant stimulus on electronic devices, social media and multi-tasking…we become “stuck” in the sympathetic nervous system and become “sympathetic dominant”. How often do you find yourself with ten plus windows open on your computer, checking cellphone texts or messages and social media posts at the same time? We have become masters of being busy and multi-tasking! We seem to have lost the ability to FOCUS and do just ONE thing at once. Instead, a “squirrel” comes by when you are writing a proposal or doing a project… DISTRACTIONS are all around us.
We have so many “notifications” and “updates” popping up on our computer screens and phones that we are becoming ADD – and it is our own fault. Constant monkey mind, lack of ability to focus and chronic activation of the STRESS system (HPA Axis) is becoming a major problem…some may say an epidemic. That is for us adults… what about the next generations to come when toddlers are stuck on their parent’s iPad and devices to keep entertained? We should be able to turn on our internal “Emergency Response Team” to run from an emergency or to put out a fire on the inside then rest, recovery and repair until the next “fire” comes our way. Due to our constant “drip” of the stress hormone cortisol, we don’t give our body systems time to recover, refuel and reset.
Instead, we are on auto-pilot and lose the ability to be in the “rest and digest” nervous system when we need to be in it as when eating meals and sleeping at night. When we are eating food when multi-tasking, driving a car, stressed, anxious or eating super-fast, we are probably not digesting our food because we are putting ourselves in the sympathetic nervous system (“Run from a lion”- fight or flight). When we are on our emails, texting, or updating our social media status at night before bed and watching television past our bedtime, while eating food mindlessly, we are probably having trouble sleeping, repairing and detoxify toxins (internal housekeeping) that should naturally occur overnight while we are sound asleep. Various reasons are related to trouble sleeping including blood sugar dysregulation, stress, digestion, blue light and more common factors!
We started using an energetic oil at my studio with Nutritional Therapy clients to help strengthen and activate the parasympathetic nervous system by improving our vagal nerve – creating more vagal tone! I tell my clients to apply the parasympathetic energetic oil on before eating, sleeping and now before they begin their Sunlighten Infrared Therapy Treatment session.
