One of my main mission and passions as a trainers for many years is how to teach people to become more efficient at burning fat at rest and during exercise. Our society has become dependent on sugar for fuel by eating excessive carbhoydrates and almost every packaged processed food contains some form of sugar. This has led me to offer a “sugar detox” fat loss challenge over the last six years which is now my “21 day Sugar Detox Challenge: The Wholestic Method to fat loss, health and performance”. I educate clients how to eat, exercise, move and hydrate over the 21 plus days to change habits as well as help them be aware of their stress levels, sleep, gut health, digestion and overall happiness in life! All these elements are essential to becoming a fat burning machine as well as a healthier individual and to improve performance in sports as triathlons, cycling and running events. We need to look at the body as a whole if we want to see results and create change…lasting change!
Almost twenty years ago I started learning about training with heart rate monitors and educating clients on heart zone training with the guidance of the guru Sally Edwards. Then I started competiting in endurance events as marathons, cycling and Ironman Triathlons where we needed to use fat for fuel or else our performance would suffer and the need for consume excess sugar would increase in order to reach the finish line in one piece. I trained for many years on the Ironman Triathlon legend Mark Allen for my Ironman races and we used heart rate training for all of our workouts and races.
Over ten years ago, I was able to start using the New Leaf Metabolic Testing cart to test clients at rest and during exercise to determine their fat burning, metabolic crossover point, anaerobic threshold and determine their training zones. I have tested and coached many individuals of all fitness levels on the treadmill then created a training and nutrition program based on their results.
I love doing the metabolic tests on clients to see what is going on at different heart rates and paces then see how much we can improve the fat burning zone by tweaking their nutrition and exercise training program. In 2014, I was able to do a training to continue my education in metabolic efficiency and take a certification course to become a certified “Metabolic Efficiency Specialist” with mentor Bob Seebohor.
Three years ago I was asked to co-host a podcast with Jon Smith called “FIT FAT FAST” where we recorded 100 episodes on how to become a fat burning machine. I was left alone as the host of the podcast and then switched the name to “SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! health and fitness podcast to talk about metabolic efficiency and the “Wholestic Method” elements.
Now at Fitness Forward Studio, we are focusing on creating more fat burning machines with our services designed to maximize your fat burning engines. How are we going to be the top fat burning studio in the Northwest?? I am putting my years of experience as a coach, trainer and athlete into one theme…how you can become a fat burning machine!
1. NEW Heart Zones Training Group Training Workouts coming this fall. We will offer HZT group training workouts designed to help you training in the appropriate zones based on the workout. We don’t need High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) every day so we want to make sure you are going hard as you can one day in our Metabolic Interval workouts then the next day the workout will be more zone 2 and zone 3 workout (active recovery) with some strength, core and mobility/yoga workout. The Heart Zones Training systems will be posted on the wall with your individual heart rate posted (nickname or codename) and recorded so you can keep track of your workouts, points and recovery in the cloud.
2. NEW Monthly Heart Zone Training workshops to teach you what your es
timated heart zones are for your workouts at Fitness Forward and the benefits of training in each heart zone.
3. NEW LEAF Metabolic Efficiency Testing: We are offering for a limited time (limited test credits!) exercise and resting metabolic tests. We can test your resting metabolism and fat burning efficiency at rest then discuss your results as well as how you can improve your fat burning (note the “Wholestic Method” will be discussed).
The exercise metabolism tests will be conducted on the treadmills for walkers, joggers or runners as we can conduct the test with various protocols as we don’t want you to go anaerobic immediately. We want to observe your fat burning efficiency and where you cross over to burning all carbohydrates from fat as your main fuel (metabolic crossover point) and your anaerobic threshold. We will review your results and then discuss the next steps for you in order to become a fat burning machine!
4. NEW Quarterly Seminars how “How to Become a Fat Burning Machine” with presenters as Dr. Geoff Lecovin, Mike Mutzel and Sally Edwards. We may even organize and host a “How to become a fat burning machine” conference in 2016! Stay tuned for that major goal, dream and project.
