You may have heard about leaky gut and a little confused what it means to your health? Well first of all most people don’t even know they have a leaky gut because they just think their health issues are just a part of aging or they get used to having the problem that they become “normal” for them. Do you want to slow the aging process and feel your best each day? Then let’s dig into what is leaky gut and talk about how you can improve your gut health.
What is leaky gut? Well without getting too deep… the digestion system is a 30 foot tube starting from your mouth and out of your bottom (anus!). The food that your digestion system breaks down is to stay in the digestive system but we often have food particles that leak through the thin gut wall lining and enter the blood stream.
Think of a castle with the guards surrounding the castle…if anyone escapes from the castle through space between the guards then they would be off into the big unknown world surrounding the private castle. The invaders create havoc in the environment where they are the enemies.
WebMD defines Leaky Gut as “Intenstinal Permeability. A possible cause of leaky gut is increased intestinal permeability or intenstinal hyperpermeability. That could happen when tight junctions in the gut, which control what passes through the lining of the small intestine, don’t work properly. That could let substances leak into the bloodstream.”
Dr.Josh Axe has a great article on how to heal a leaky gut but what are the symptoms if you have a leak in your gut?
I realized I probably had leaky gut from chronic stress in my life (work stress, overloaded schedule, financial and endurance exercise stress). I also probably has “stress” from too much coffee and intermittent fasting while training for Ironman triathlons and marathons. Adrenal Fatigue or exhaustion is a symptom of leaky gut and that was my issue after visisting tons of doctors and practitioners in the area and online. You need to do your own research to find a doctor who is also trained in nutrition or a functional medicine doctor or Naturapath…someone who will dig deep to researching your symptoms, correct lab work then the correct treatment to treat the root cause with what I call the “WHOLESTIC Method” to healing from the inside out. You can’t just take medication or supplements to heal your gut. Your gut has a leak for a reason…find out your reason.
More and more people (including my clients) are sharing struggles with their health and their symptoms related to a leaky gut as well as other auto-immune challenges. Our increasingly stressed personalities, over dependence on processed factory made food, antibiotics and other medications as well as lack of sleep and overscheduled lives are contributing to the increasing problems of our gut health Some practitioners believe “all disease begins in the gut” (Hippocrates).
