You are to have a protective barrier between your gut and the rest of your body.
Your digestive system has a top and a bottom… your mouth and the other end- your anus.
We are designed to have “guards” protecting our “kingdom” and not let the enemies out or in. Due to our habit of living life as a race each day and poor eating habits, we breakdown our gut wall lining and create a premeable lining leading to “leaky gut” syndrome.
Suddenly even foods that are natural and organic whole foods can become tagged as enemies if they are maldigested, irritate the gut wall lining and “leak” through the gut to the outside world where they are not to visit. Soon we have bloated bell and an inflammed body!
How can we improve our digestive system?
Well I shared lots of ideas in my manual on Amazon called “The WHOLESTIC Method Manual & Workbook” as well as on my weekly podcast THE WHOLE ATHLETE.
For starters you can do some simple tips to improve digestion and avoid “leaky gut”:
- slow down, pause and reset before eating
- don’t eat while multi-tasking
- avoid inflammatory foods (more below)
- eat real nutrient dense whole foods
- test your HRV with Sweet Beat Life (heart rate variability- find past The WHOLE Athlete podcast episodes with Ronda Collier)
- use Vibrant Blue Oils PNS before eating to aid in digestion
- slow down and focus on chewing your food, tasting the flavors and enjoying your meal!
In Nutritional Therapy, we work with each client as an individual to find the root cause to their unexplained symptom as inflammation, fatigue, weight gain, bloated belly and more health concerns.
Here are some suggestions I have used with clients as well as information from one of my favorite resources:
Nutritional Therapy Plan: The WHOLESTIC Method
- Focus on low-carb, high fat food plan to heal gut, balance blood sugar and mood
- PNS oil to simulate Vagal Tone to use pre-meal and pre-bedtime.
- Bed by 10pm – get quality sleep by staying off electronics devices pre-bed. Trying reading before and writing gratitude daily journal/prayer/meditation. (Check out this post on how to improve the quality of your sleep.)
- De-stress by deep breathing with long exhale to “reset” when needed plus gargling, humming and unplugging nature walks will help you slow down, un-wind and reset.
- Take walk breaks outside during the day when possible
- Try adding mobility movement exercises during the day when working as well as after eating to aid in digestion.
Common suggestions Leaky Gut Protocol that work for NTP Clients:
1. REMOVE foods and factors that damage the gut- sugar, grains, conventional meat, conventional dairy and GMO foods.
- Top toxic exposures to eliminate are tap water, pesticides, NSAIDS and antibiotics.
- No commercial dairy
- Gluten, grains, wheat
- Peanuts
- Soy
- Sugar
2. REPLACE with healing foods protocol
- Bone Broth – broth contains collagen and the amino acids proline and glycine that can help heal your damaged cell walls. I’ve had many of my patients do a bone broth fast for three days to help heal leaky gut and cure autoimmune disease.
- Raw Cultured Dairy – contains both probiotics and SCFA’s that can help heal the gut. Pastured kefir, yogurt, amasai, butter and raw cheese are some of the best.
- Fermented Vegetables – contain organic acids that balance intestinal pH and probiotics to support the gut. Sauerkraut, kimchi and kvass are excellent sources.
- Coconut Products – all coconut products are especially good for your gut. The MCFA’s in coconut are easier to digest than other fats so they work well for leaky gut. Also, coconut kefir contains probiotics that support your digestive system. (Coconut Cult Probiotics)
- Sprouted Seeds – chia seeds, flaxseeds and hemp seeds that have been sprouted are great sources of fiber that can help support the growth of beneficial bacteria. But if you have severe leaky gut, you may need to start out getting your fiber from steamed vegetables and frut.
- Omega-3 fats – anti-inflammatory foods like grass-fed beef, lamb and wild-caught fish like salmon.
3. REPAIR with specific supplements
Most beneficial leaky gut supplements are –we will test which work for you:
- l-glutamine – is critical for any program designed to heal leaky gut. Glutamine powder is an essential amino acid supplement that is anti-inflammatory and necessary for the growth and repair of your intestinal lining. L-glutamine benefits include acting as a protector: coating your cell walls and acting as a repellent to irritants. Take 2–5 grams twice daily.
- Digestive enzymes – (one or two capsules at the beginning of each meal) ensure that foods are fully digested, decreasing the chance that partially digested foods particles and proteins are damaging your gut wall.
- Aloe Vera juice
- Quercetin – has also been shown to improve gut barrier function by sealing the gut because it supports creation of tight junction proteins. It also stabilizes mast cells and reduces the release of histamine, which is common in food intolerance. New studies have also shown its effectiveness in healing ulcerative colitis. Take 500 milligrams three times daily with meals.
- NAG
- Licorice root (in the adrenal drops) – is an adaptogenic herb that helps balance cortisol levels and improves acid production in the stomach. DGL supports the body’s natural processes for maintaining the mucosal lining of the stomach and duodenum. This herb is especially beneficial if someone’s leaky gut is being caused by emotional stress. Take 500 milligrams twice daily.
- Probiotics – to replenish good bacteria and crowds out the bad bacteria. We should find our probiotics in both food and supplement form (we use-Coconut Cult). Often people follow only part of part of the gut healing protocol by removing the damaging irritants (foods) but they often don’t add in the good probiotic sources to re-inoculating their gut to keep the bad bacteria in control. Consume both probiotic-rich foods and take AT LEAST 50 billion units of probiotics daily from a high-quality brand.
If you can follow the above protocol, you are well on your way to successfully treating your gut for good.
