Let’s get started with my monthly THE WHOLESTIC METHOD 5-day Jumpstart Challenge and get an overview of the eight elements of THE WHOLESTIC METHOD!
Bonus- we are doing are 5-day Challenge the same week as my Team KION leader Ben Greenfield is leading their five day fast! I finished the new KION COACHING program with Ben Greenfield last month and now I will be joining forces with KION programs and coaching services. The KION Program blends ancient wisdom with modern science.
The 5-Day fast beings Monday, January 7th and ends on Friday January 11th, 2019! BUT you may need to consult with your doctor if you are under medical supervision.
What does the fasting challenge entail?
- Fasting is easier than you think but doing a fast in a group and with a team is very important in my experience!
Why should we fast? Why not! Think back to our ancestors and how they lived…they ate when they were able to find food and then had a break until the next opportunity. Feast or famine. Our body is to be trained to burn fat for its main fuel so we should be okay for hours without eating. Instead our the food industry and “political nutrition” has taught us via effective marketing campaigns to eat every few hours to keep the metabolism charged up. They also taught us that we need to eat more carbohydrates and avoid healthy natural fats so we switched to eating a high-carbohydrate, non-fat diet. Then we were afraid of eating any saturated fats as we were told fats would increase our cholesterol and increase our risk for heart disease.
What are we to believe? I believe in eating real food, finding the right mix of macronutrients that make you feel energized, satisfied and full for hours- while balancing your blood sugar and metabolizing fat stores for fuel.
Yes we need to move more and lift heavy objects more as well as get outside for some “Vitamin N” (Nature) and Vitamin D. BUT we also need to fast periodically – intermittant fasting (12-16 hour overnight fast) is easy to implement into your weekly schedule or do a liquid 24-hour fast…or get serious and do a water fast. Our body can adapt to deal with periods of famine and survive – and you will be surprised at how great you feel from the inside out when you implement fasting into your lifestyle!
Now we do an overnight 16-hour fast by stopping eating before 6pm or even 7pm the previous night then waiting to eat the following day to “Break the Fast”. When you are fasting- you are allowed to …
- drink clean water (avoid tap water if possible)
- drink clean organic coffee (french press ideally with KION Coffee and avoid K-cup coffee) without any toppings (no cream)
- drink herbal tea
- supplement with amino acids
When we do a liquid fast on intermittant fasting days in the “eating window”, we consume Kettle & Fire bone broth throughout the eating window, as well as Dr. Axe Keto Feast Shake
The benefits of fasting include improving aging, body composition and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease without negatively affecting thyroid and sex hormones, metabolism, lean body mass, hunger and feeling cold! Which ever length of fasting you commit to during our five day challenge – you will benefit yourself by:
- improving cell autophagy – the repair process of cleansing the cells- removing the old, damaged cells and replace with new, fresh cells to optimize their function. This repair process of the cells may help with aging, longevity and metabolic health.
- improved body composition– fasting over 12 hours has shown to improve fat oxidation and help promote ketosis as well as increase human growth hormone (HGH to help preserve muscle) and burn body fat.
- improved energy levels- energy levels may increase during fasting to give the body energy to survive (and hunt!).
- blood sugar regulation– as we say in Nutritional Therapy…the goal is to balance the blood sugar to avoid insulin surges so we are burning fat for our main fuel source. Fasting can help lower blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity. Learn more in Jason Fung’s book on Fasting (link below)!
- gut health- stress impacts every part of your body (learn more in my LIFE IS NOT A RACE book on Amazon), including your gut health. Fasting improve diversity in the microbiome and elevate fermentation to help create a stronger gut as well as immune system (70% of your immune system lies in your gut wall lining -in Pryer Patches!).
- brain health- fasting can protect nerve cells from degeneration (which also helps with growth of new nerve cells in the brain), improve learning, memory and protect against other neurodenerative diseases.
- appetite regulation– the regulation of hunger and appetite hormones called Ghrelin and Leptin are improved with fasting. Ghrelin hormone is our “hunger hormone” and Leptin is our hormones that tells us we are full and satiated. These appetite regulating hormones become dysfunctional with our over eating, obesity, blood sugar imbalances and stress. Fasting has been shown to help normal the hormone Leptin by regulating the hormone Ghrelin- thus help with appetite control!
- improved blood lipid profiles– a few of our key blood lipid markers have been shown to improve with fasting including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and triglycerides.

You will only need to do this for five days… or keep going as I like to do intermittant fasting during the work week as well as do one bone broth fast per week (often I day that I am busy and not exercising as much).
The Kettle & Fire broth is quick to heat up in the morning while I am making my french press coffee with my new favorite KION coffee (so clean tasting as other coffees taste so moldy!). Then while at work, I drink a Keto Shake (Dr. Axe Vanilla) plus I add Tumeric Tonic from Further Food into a tasty nutritional shake to keep me going on a busy day but still keep on my liquid fast.
On the other fasting days, I do intermittant fasting but I have one meal during the day…a big meal with lots of vegetables, healthy fats and good source of protein that keeps me full, energized and satisfied for hours! My work day hours vary as I am with clients, teaching groups or doing my own workout sessions, so Monday and Wednesdays I eat my main meal around 4pm when I am done with clients but Tuesday and Thursdays I work a “split shift” so my main meal is around 12pm then I workout in the afternoon and train clients 4pm-7pm then home to bed! I always make sure I get my 8-9 hours of sleep and relaxation time when I need a “reset” and “reboot” for my system. SLEEP is an essential part of The WHOLESTIC Method and my healing from “adrenal exhaustion”.
As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I also take different supplements to help my own health as tested on my body with another practitioner, so I take essential fatty acids, KION Lean, HCL supplement and enzymes as well as Tru Niagen, Glutathione and B12 drops. Don’t guess which supplements to take after reading blogs and listening to podcasts- find a NTP or FDN to help test what your body is lacking to find homeostasis and optimize your health!
Taking time to relax, walk outside and do breathing exercises throughout the day is essential as well to our Jumpstart Challenge as we need to reset and reboot the system which includes reducing external sources of stress as well as the internal stressors.
