Since the New Year of 2018 kicked off, I have been on a mission to experience local therapies, remedies or treatments to slow down the aging process and to improve performance (in life and sports!). I have tested out NW Cryotherapy, Infrared Sauna heat therapy and floating at Urban Float.
Floating is a new experience. I feel that I am trying to take a nap in the afternoon as I float in a pod with no light or sound. After experiencing serious adrenal exhaustion starting in 2013 and sharing my personal story in LIFE IS NOT A RACE, I have been forced to transform the “WHOLE” me from the inside out in order to heal, rebuild and recover. As a personal trainer for 25 plus years and owner of FITNESS FORWARD STUDIO in Bellevue for the past ten years, I know I am not the only one who suffers from being addicted to busyness and over-scheduling my days. I know we all need to take a moment to pause, reset and reboot our internal systems so join me on my journey!
What does floating at Urban Float do for you? Well forcing you to slow down, disconnect and unplug for one hour for starters.
Here is a video tour I did of the Kirkland Urban Float…
Here is what they tell you before you arrive… and afterwards!
What do I need to know and what should I bring? We supply you with everything needed for the showers before and after your float, including towels, hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. You may want to bring a brush or comb. To prepare for your float:1. Avoid caffeine at least 8 hours prior, you’ll want to be able to completely relax.2. Avoid shaving at least 4 hours prior, the epsom salt water can sting freshly shaven skin. What do I do while I float? Floating is usually a passive experience, so the less you do…the deeper you will relax. Meditation and breathing exercises are common. You can also use your time to “actively” direct the experience in the tank, i.e. prepare for an important meeting, presentation or test by going through it in your head. Most people, however, enjoy just letting go and flowing with wherever the experience takes them.Do you wear anything in the float tank? Most people don’t wear anything. Anything you wear will get very heavy with the salt solution and press against your body…thus becoming a distraction. What time of day is best to use the float tank? This is a matter of individual preference. Some people prefer floating in the morning, some prefer floating at night. The best way to find out is to experiment by using the tank at different times of the day. Remember to avoid caffeine though for at least 8 hours prior to floating. Will I be able to resume my daily activities when I get out? Yes. If you are new to floating however, it may be a good idea to keep your schedule somewhat open for the period following the float, so that you can savor the experience for a while. Or better yet plan to spend a little relaxing time hanging out in our post float lounge enjoying a cup of complementary tea before re-engaging with the outside world. If this is your first appointment with us please be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment start time or better yet come as early as you like and decompress in our relaxation lounge first. You can always reach us at (206) 257-4333.Urban Float |

The world is starting to become more clear…
Aches and chronic pains can subside for days and weeks. Mental clarity persists in the days following a float and sleep improves. Weight loss can continue for months after a single float. Lots of things claim to change your life: floating regularly actually will. Read up on how studies and research has made floating one of the most popular methods of treatment for pain, clarity for the creative or preparation for the athletes in all of us.
What to do if….
- Your ear is still salty? If you didn’t wear earplugs and didn’t use the vinegar wash or even if you did, putting white vinegar in your ears, even days after, will help get rid of salty residue.
- Your hair is saltified? Wash it out again at home. We suggest using hot water at first, then shampoo and conditioner. For really salty hair, using white vinegar will save the day and break it down.
- Your clothes are salty? Don’t worry! It washes right out: easy peasy.
- You feel too good afterwards? Sorry. No Cure. You’ll have to deal.
Try it out… you probably could use an hour of doing nothing!
