Standard American Diet: Are You Feeling SAD from What You Eat?

Now I was just writing about brain health and depression in a previous blog post, but this time I am talking about you eating S.A.D. (The Standard American Diet).

The “diet” that we grew up believing that was healthy for us is actually a really good marketing campaign by the food corporations and political nutrition groups.  Packaged foods as cereal, spreads, crackers, sauces, drinks and more are really fake foods- manufactured processed foods.

If you read the ingredients on the back of the label – you should be able to understand the words and as Michael Pollen said in his “FOOD RULES” book – make sure a 3rd grader can pronounce the words as well as make sure your great-grandmother would have eaten the food.

We are busy people so taking time out of our day to cook a meal from scratch may not be an easy task so opening up a container of “food’ and tossing it into the microwave may sound like the best solution for getting a quick meal or picking something up in the drive through or take out.  Then we rush eating the “food” because we have better things to do with our time!

We have two major problems here which are connected to our health and chronic diseases:

  1. Consuming processed and manufactured fake foods that are high in refined sugars, vegetable oils and chemicals.
  2. Digestion and nutrient absorption is impaired as we rush to eat non-real foods quickly while being in a sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) state rather than the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest).

What are the symptoms of eating a processed food diet and rushing while eating?

Chronic diseases: arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, auto-immune function, obesity and more chronic diseases can be improve or reduced if we look at the root cause with Nutritional Therapy treatment…

  • mitochondrial dysfunction
  • chronic stress and stressors
  • detoxification imbalances
  • digestive dysfunction
