Choice…best results from a 10 mile run or lift heavy objects?

The other day I was listening to an old podcast (really old…#3 of Bulletproof Exec) and they were talking about what is a more effective workout:

a.  Run 10 miles

b.  Lift heavy objects

I have my answer but I thought I would post the question on Twitter to Facebook to see what people had to say.  I don’t look at Facebook as much as I used to since I deleted the app on my phone (try it..best decision ever!) but when I logged in on my computer I was surprised to read all the various responses:

  • Lifting
  • Hmmm
  • Can’t outrun a poor diet.
  • Agree…Lift!
  •  #Whenindoubtliftitout
  •  Eat right and weight lift. Cardio is good for the heart but not so efficient changing body composition.
  • You need to have both and a sound diet. Diet being the most important factor here.
  •  I’m with the lifting votes. And proper nutrition pre and post workout!
  • Also, I don’t think you need to run 10 miles in one shot. Unless you are training for an endurance event, then that would warrant higher mileage runs. You do need cardio though to not only support a healthy heart and lungs but to maximize oxygen to working muscles for when you’re lifting. Yes the more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism. Cardio should not be discounted though.
  • Bicycle!
  • Run and then lift heavy weights smile emoticon
  • Wow I am not on Facebook very often but good conversation you have going… I of course always say NUTRITION first but the question was referring to which is the best way to exercise to change shape of body and get lean? I heard this question on a podcast… long run or strength training/intervals?
  • I still say you need both. Without lean muscle you will not have an efficient metabolism in order to burn fat, on the other side of the coin you will still need the cardio in order to aid in the fat burning process. Example would be your typical bodySee More

  • Technically both, just depends on what “shape” you want to be in.
  • Lift. Look at marathon runner bodies look at strength training bodies. Pretty easy choice to me
My thoughts?
Well yes the question was either run or lift weights.  Of course I would say nutrition is the most important over exercise to change the body as you “Can’t out exercise a bad diet”.
I do know from my own years of experience as a runner and endurance athlete plus observations of people’s body fat levels at over hundreds of races… running doesn’t change the shape of your body as much IF you want to be lean and have muscle definition (unless you have amazing genetics).  Yes for sure metabolic efficiency is key… we can train our bodies to be a sugar burner or fat burning machine.  If you want to be lean and see muscle definition we definitely need to work on our food choices but they type of exercise we choose to do makes a huge difference.  Variety is key but lifting heavy objects will give your more visible results if you are looking for the toned and defined look!
My body responds best to obviously a lower carb food plan but my body really changes when I do more interval strength training workouts as we do at Fitness Forward Studio.  I have to take my trainer’s group training sessions as it is difficult for me to work as hard and push myself as much as I do in a small group.  My clients/friends/workout partners challenge me to become stronger and leaner as they work so hard!  If I can devote three strength training sessions per week for 30 minutes that include hard cardio intervals as the battling rope and slam balls or wall balls then I will definitely change my body..as long as I manage my stress, sleep, nutrition and happiness!
