You are what you eat but what should you eat…and how do you know if you are absorbing the nutrients from the food you are eating? We need to eat real, whole foods that are nutrient dense that is ideally organic, local and in-season. Often we are eating right by perhaps not right for our metabolic type and ancestral background. How do you know what to eat and if your digestion is working? Most people are low in hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes as well as eating foods that we are sensitive to in our gut.

Maybe ordering a lot of labs is out of your budget but what if we could at least start with finding out your ancestral background and genetic test results as with 23andMe?
Many factors can alter our response to various food plans or “diets” which demonstrates that there is not one size fits all approach to tell you what to eat. We are all unique human beings with a different make up as:
- genetics
- microbiome
- activity levels
- age
- gender
- hormone status
- metabolic health
- methylation
- environment
- organ health
We all agree on that we need to avoid processed foods, vegetable oils, refined sugars, factory-conventional animal products and gluten for most people. We do know we all should eat local and in season with essential fatty acids, plants,, herbs and spices as well as including some type of fasting (“feast or famine) as our ancestors did occasionally. We know we should be fat burning machines and not be stuck on the blood sugar roller coaster (plus sugar addictions).
Here is something I have been learning and applying to my own nutritional needs. I am putting the info from VIOME, 23andME and Arivale together to determine the ideal food and supplement plan for my body. You can order a DNA test from https://www.ancestry.com/ or https://you.23andme.com/ which will tell you your ancestry composition as my test from 23andME showed me that I had a Northern European background:
100% European
- British & Irish 69.0% (United Kingdom)
- French & German 12.9%
- Scandinavian 4.2% (and Norway)
- Broadly Northwestern European 12.8%
- Broadly Southern European 0.2%
- Broadly European 0.8%
Now how accurate is genetic testing as it is such new research and just a little sample of your saliva off your cheek! Crazy.
