A New Year brings a New Journey…to be fat adaped

As 2013 is right around the corner, the holiday season of over-indulging comes to an end and then New Year Resolutions to lose weight, begin. As I read the “health” magazines on my Christmas vacation about the many “solutions” to not gaining weight over the holidays and how to “drop 10 pounds” in January with the “best new diet” of 2013. The misleading information offered by various media sources drives me to speak out…I feel the need to share some basic nutrition knowledge with our community. I can see why consumers are so confused about what are the best “life style” and the best “quick fix” to lose weight. The information out there is very misleading and contradictory but losing weight is pretty simple…
What is the solution to losing weight in the New Year? Make the choice to eat real whole foods! Our food choices should not come from a box with a label and extra-long list of ingredients. We need to not be “fat phobic” and consume “diet foods” as low-fat and fat free. We have lost the ability to rely on preparing our own food from scratch and depend more on prepared packaged “man made” foods. The whole grains, sugar-free, low-fat and fat-free foods in the market that consumers believe are “healthy” weight loss products are filled with extra sugar, chemicals and preservatives. The more simple sugars/carbohydrates we consume, the more our bodies depend on sugar for fuel. We have 80,000 plus fat calories stored in our bodies to be used as fuel… only 1200-2000 calories of stored carbohydrates are stored for energy. Why do we want to continue creating a sugar-burning metabolism and be inefficient at burning fat fuel?
How can we improve our ability to use fat stores for energy? We need to stop relying on a “high carb, low-fat diet” to lose weight. We need to eat less sugar found in processed foods and add more healthy fats that we have been told not to eat!
A New Year… A New Beginning. Begin a new journey this year by developing new eating habits and exercise program. Start with cleaning out your pantry and refrigerator then restock with real fresh foods including non-commercial dairy, coconut oil, avocados and seeds. Purchase more organic fresh local vegetables, wild fish, cage free eggs and more “real foods” to add into your daily food plan. Plan ahead, be organized and prepared, then your new eating habits will be quick to become part of your new lifestyle.
If your “New Year’s Resolution” is to lose weight… contact a knowledgeable nutritionist, naturopath or fitness trainer that can help lead you to your new journey of becoming fat adapted. Contact Debbie Potts for more resources on becoming fat adapted or finding a “Superhuman” coach.
