How to Disconnect While On Vacation

Last night I arrived home from a week vacation in Paris (5 nights) and London (3 nights).  This was a quick trip- one week instead of two but I was able to transition into “vacation mode” and turn off my “work brain”.

How can you adjust into vacation mode quickly? Be offline.

Remember what it was like to go on a vacation without texting, emails, phone calls and social media? Well, you can pretend that you don’t have internet or Wifi while you are on vacation.

It is so simple yet people don’t see to be able to disconnect and unplug.

I understand that if you have kids or family emergency you need to share a number to get a hold of you when needed and for sure shared your itinerary.

Then here is what you need to do next… it is time to get organized!

  1. Prepare the week ahead to let everyone know you are going to be on vacation and not available via text or email unless an emergency.  Maybe add an auto email and voicemail alert that you will not be responding to messages until a specific date- but try not to announce that you are out of town!
  2. Make sure you have your home and/or work organized so you can leave town without stress.
  3. Once on the airplane…put your phone and Ipad device in airplane mode then turn off cellular data.
  4. Turn off all notifications and disable anything else you have set up alerts (unless family/work emergency)
  5. Delete temping apps as Facebook, Instagram and other social media programs if you are addicted
  6. While on vacation- keep phone off the WiFi and just use as a camera.
  7. Upload photos at end of day to the cloud but make sure you do not open the email, text, internet or apps!  Don’t do it!
  8. Save photos and favorites so you can share your favorite photos after vacation – plus best not to announce to the world that you will be out of town and your house is open for anyone to come visit!

Try disconnecting from your cell phone, computer and electronic devices on your next weekend or vacation.

Then try to “detox” from electronics once a month.

Then work towards one day a week as a Sunday!

If you plan ahead – then you can unplug, be present and focus on enjoying each memorable moment on your next real vacation or even a stay-cation.
