My top ten list from hiking/climbing/running the Enchantments in Leavenworth last month.
1. Study the trail and have an experienced leader. Know how to follow the trail by looking for the stacked rocks called “cairns”…especially if your leader can’t find the trail so you have to take over.
2. The trail we did is 20 miles. Not 18. And due to the technicality of the trail to takes 10-11 hours not 7-9 hours as I was told… But the time goes by very quickly as scenery keeps changing, trail and terrain.
3. Swear words may have been developed when people were hiking/climbing up snow and ice covered faces.
4. Put on your micro spikes before you start climbing steep mountain side covered with ice and snow sections
5. Hiking always takes longer than you think …especially on steep technical climbs and boulder fields. One mile took 1.5 hours. And lots of photo opportunities.
6. Panicking doesn’t help get you up to the top of the climb or anywhere!
7. Real food tastes great… Sweet potatoes, jerky, cheese, nuts and raw bars.
8. A quiet trail is more relaxing than having people behind you talk loudly in a foreign language.
9. Hiking a challenging course is great way to clear your head as you are concentrating on every step.
10. Don’t worry about time…enjoy the scenery and stop to take amazing photos.
We are up for the challenge in September 2014!
