The FutureYou Method Starts with FLOW: Why Rebounding Is More Than Exercise

More Than a Trampoline: Why Rebounding Became Part of My FutureYou™ Method

I have been on a mission to improve how I age ever since I turned 50.

That milestone wasn’t just another birthday—it became a turning point in my life.

Around the same time, I lost my dad shortly after he turned 80. Watching him navigate multiple chronic health conditions made me ask a different question. Instead of wondering, “What happens as we age?” I became fascinated by “Why do we age the way we do?”

That curiosity has only grown stronger over the past five years as I’ve watched my 85-year-old mom face new health challenges of her own. Every hospital visit, every doctor’s appointment, and every new diagnosis has reinforced my belief that our bodies are incredibly intelligent—and that our daily choices influence how we age.

That journey inspired me to create two frameworks that now guide both my personal life and my coaching practice: The FLOW™ Foundation and The FutureYou™ Method.

Why I Created the FLOW™ Foundation

Last year, my mom was hospitalized for a large kidney stone. My sister and I took turns staying with her, and, as usual, my curious brain wanted to understand more than just the diagnosis.

I wanted to know why.

Not just why kidney stones occur, but what foundational systems influence our body’s ability to circulate nutrients, remove waste, recover, and adapt as we age.

As I reflected on my own health journey and the patterns I’d seen in hundreds of clients over the years, I realized many people were struggling with the same underlying challenges: chronic stress, inactivity, shallow breathing, poor recovery, declining muscle mass, and reduced movement throughout the day.

Those observations became the foundation of my “The FLOW™ Method.

The word FLOW reminds us that before we ask our body to perform, we need to support the systems that allow it to function well.

F — Free the Nervous System

Help the body shift into a state where it can rest, digest, recover, and repair.

L — Lymphatic Flow

Support healthy circulation of lymph through movement, breathing, hydration, and muscle contractions.

O — Oxygen & Cellular Energy

Improve breathing, circulation, metabolic flexibility, and the ability to efficiently produce energy.

W — Waste Processing & Elimination

Support the body’s natural ability to process and eliminate metabolic waste through healthy digestion, bile flow, kidneys, and regular bowel function.

When FLOW improves, we create better conditions for adaptation.

And adaptation is what ultimately builds the future version of ourselves.

Every Choice Sends a Signal

One of the core principles of The FutureYou™ Method is simple:

Your body isn’t broken—it’s adapting to the signals you send every day.

  • Every meal.
  • Every workout.
  • Every hour spent sitting—or moving.
  • Every breath.
  • Every night of sleep.

Your body is constantly gathering information and deciding how to respond.  The goal isn’t to exercise harder.  The goal is to consistently send signals that tell your body:  “I’m safe. I have enough energy. It’s okay to build, repair, and adapt.”

Why I Love Rebounding

This is exactly why rebounding has become one of my favorite movement tools for my aging clients, those working at home and now my mother!

No, a rebounder does not replace strength training. Building muscle remains one of the most important health investments we can make as we age (and I am still working on getting my mom to do strength training consistently at 85 years of age!).

But rebounding is an easy, enjoyable way to add movement throughout the day… plus bouncing around makes most people smile and laugh as they feel as a child again!

The gentle bouncing creates rhythmic muscle contractions that help promote circulation while encouraging the movement of lymphatic fluid. Bouncing on the rebounder also challenges balance and coordination, all while being much lower impact than running or jumping on hard surfaces.  I find that even five minutes can make a difference if it helps you interrupt long periods of sitting- perfect for my work day (especially if I set a reminder for myself to get up and bounce).  Also, a rebounder is a great movement tool to use while you are watching a webinar or video (maybe just don’t show your video if you are on a live group call!).

One of my favorite habits is combining rebounding with morning sunlight and slow diaphragmatic nasal breathing. It’s a simple way to support circulation, practice better breathing mechanics, and start the day with movement.

Helping My Mom Keep Moving

One of the reasons I chose the BCAN Fitness Rebounder was my mom.

At 85 years old, she has knee arthritis, reduced muscle mass, and understandably feels less steady than she once did. I assembled the rebounder with the stability bar so she has something secure to hold while she moves.

One feature I especially appreciate is the built-in phone holder. We can set up a FaceTime call while she uses the rebounder, allowing me to coach and encourage her from a distance. Movement becomes something we do together, even when we’re miles apart.

Our goal isn’t an intense workout.  It’s simply to keep her moving safely.

Ideally, I’d love for her to use it outdoors so she can enjoy morning sunlight at the same time. Because of the rebounder’s height and her knee limitations, we’d first make sure she has a sturdy step and appropriate support so she can get on and off safely.

Rebounding is only one piece of her plan.

We’re also working on progressive strength training with her physical therapist, encouraging regular gym visits, and focusing on protein-rich meals throughout the day. Since reaching 100 grams of protein through food alone is challenging for her, protein shakes have become an important way to help increase her daily intake and support healthy aging.

Build Before You Burn™

One of the biggest myths about aging is that we simply need to exercise more.

I believe we need to exercise smarter.

  • We need to build muscle.
  • We need to move frequently.
  • We need to breathe better.
  • We need to support FLOW before asking our bodies to perform.

Because healthy aging isn’t created by one perfect workout.

It’s built through thousands of small decisions repeated consistently over time.

That’s the heart of the FLOW™ Foundation.

That’s the philosophy behind the FutureYou™ Method.

And that’s why something as simple as stepping onto a rebounder for five or ten minutes each day can become another meaningful signal that helps you build a healthier, stronger future version of yourself.
