Do we need to do a DETOX and CLEANSE?

Why do a DETOX, CLEANSE and RESET program?

In ‘The WHOLESTIC Method 30-Day Transformation’ Journey program, I have created a three-phase program designed

  • to teach the body how to burn fat the its main fuel source
  • how to improve the function of the liver to detoxify toxins internally and externally
  • how to cleanse the body toxins
  • improve performance in endurance sports as well as life by improving the function of our engine at a cellular level
  • optimize brain health by decreasing carbohydrate dependence and breaking down ketones to be used for fuel by the brain- helping focus, concentration and clarity.

The WHOLESTIC Method 30-Day Transformation Journey includes

Phase One: 5-Day Detox and Reset Jumpstart Challenge (Liver Detox)

Phase Two: 21-Day Sugar Detox and Reset Challenge (Cleanse)

Phase Three:  Maintenance 80/20 (Metabolic Reset)

Did you know our body has its own natural housekeeping system: The detoxification system?  Our body has its own innate intelligence to operate on its own at an optimal level – IF we take care of health from the inside out. This includes taking care of what we put on our skin, what products we use to clean our house, the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the list goes on.  The World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) state that the cause of 60-80% of all cancers are a result of chemicals in our food, water, and air.  A build up of toxins in our body can lead to or be connected as the root cause of heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, neurological diseases, depression, and anxiety.  TOXICITY in our body can be eliminated if we take ownership for our health by improving our detoxification system via resetting the eight elements of The WHOLESTIC Method, detoxifying the liver and improving the digestive system with a cleanse and elimination food plan.  We can eliminate common food sensitivities as well as refined sugars and processed foods but first we need to reboot the natural housekeeping system and reset the body’s innate intelligence to get it running optimally.

We are to flush out the toxins through the elimination pathways which is not only the “master organ” the LIVER but also via the kidneys (urination), our skin (sweating), lungs (breathing) and the gut via bile (elimination lymphatic system and out via the colon).

Detoxification via the liver occurs in two phases – called simply “phase I” and “phase II” detox pathways. According to Biotics Research Corporation (www.bioticsresearch.com) with proper nutrition by eating a whole food, nutrient dense diet that includes specific vitamins, enzymes and minerals that will allow the body’s metabolism to run optimally and eliminate toxins.  The challenge we face is the excessive amount of toxins in our environment that we face every day accumulates.  Eventually our liver gets tired, sluggish, and congested which results in a build up of toxins in our body.

Phase I Detox Pathway:  the body enzymes activate the toxic substances to make them more accessible for phase II pathways.

Phase II Detox Pathway:  specific enzymes are converted into water-soluble molecules (harmless) that are then eliminated from the body.

Our “master organ” – the liver needs a “filter” change just as we do for our car. We spend money getting an oil and filter change for our cars a few times a year as well as a tune up, but we don’t think of how our body needs an overhaul, detox, cleanse and reset a few times a year as well!  An internal reset and reboot to the system!

When our body starts to have a shortage of the key nutritional ingredients necessary for proper detoxification processes, now the toxins get stored in our tissues (fat cells!) instead of getting eliminated!  Now we have toxic fat stored in our body which can lead to a long list of chronic illnesses.

Signs of Toxicity and toxic build up: include the following

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Headaches, muscle aches, and muscle fatigue
  • Joint pain
  • Allergies
  • Acid reflux and heart burn
  • Constipation
  • Mood swings
  • Abdominal pain
  • Food sensitivities or allergies
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Skin conditions as rosacea
  • Chronic back ache
  • Immune weakness
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Blood sugar dysregulation
  • Difficulty concentrating

If your health is your wealth… then shouldn’t you invest in yourself and optimize your engine at a cellular level?   Hopefully now you are understanding the importance of our liver and our detoxification system (natural housekeeping system) but if it is sluggish, overwhelmed and broken down then guess what happens?    The liver has over 500 jobs to do- so at least we take time every season to give it a little reset and reboot as a thank you!

The liver oversees:

  • Bile production needed to digest fat and excretion of toxins via bile
  • Excretion of cholesterol, hormones, and drugs
  • Break down of hormones
  • Enzyme activation
  • Storage of glycogen (stored form of glucose)
  • Stores essential vitamin A, minerals, and iron
  • Synthesis of plasma proteins as albumin and to help proper blood clotting factors
  • Metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates
  • Detoxifies our blood
  • Processing of the nutrients absorbed by the intestines, so they are easily absorbed
  • Destroying old red blood cells
  • Breaking down alcohol and medications
  • Producing essential cholesterol and proteins needed by the body
  • Toxin removal from the bloodstream as bilirubin, ammonia and more.

I do believe we need to take our health seriously and take ownership so that I why I am implementing a “detox” program for five days into our 30-day transformation program then a “cleanse”.  We have had years of exposure to toxins in our environment as well as toxins in our foods we consume including pesticides and herbicides sprayed on our fruits and vegetables plus damage to our soil on farmlands.

If our liver function is not optimal, then we can’t digest our food properly, especially fats so if eating a “keto” type of low-carb, high-fat diet then you may want to make sure your liver/gallbladder is functioning optimally first!  If you are eating whole nutrient dense foods and you are still not feeling well, then look at the root cause as we do in Nutritional Therapy:

  • Are you digesting and absorbing your foods?
  • Is your liver and gallbladder functioning optimally?
  • Are your elimination pathways open and functioning: kidneys, skin, lungs, and liver?

What is a DETOX?

  • Purpose: to eliminate toxins from the body by turning them into waste then the toxic waste gets eliminated from the body
  • Goal: to enhance the body’s detoxification pathways -primarily the liver as it is the main detoxification “master” organ but also the skin, lungs, kidneys
  • Method: Improvements in our lifestyle and nutrition habits while eliminating solid foods including meat and processed food for a “digestive system vacation”.  Replacing solid foods with green vegetable drinks, detox teas, Apple Cider Vinegar detox drink mix, “Witches Brew” tea and sipping on cups of bone broth.
  • Supplements: include herbal supplements, infrared saunas, hot/cold therapy
  • Benefits: improve liver function and optimize health at a cellular level to help clear pesticides, medications, heavy metals, and other toxic build up in your system.

Detoxifying foods:

Green Tea:  helps the body eliminate free radicals

Garlic: helps detoxify the liver

Onions: detoxes the liver

Ginger: detoxes the liver and helps with digestion

Lemons: detoxes the digestive tract

Apples:  detoxes the liver

Grapefruit: detoxes the liver and helps prevent kidney stones

Pineapple: cleanses the stomach

Kale: detoxes and flushes out the kidney

Asparagus: detoxes the liver

Beets: detoxes the liver and helps eliminate free radicals and high in Nitric Oxide which is beneficial for cleansing the blood.  Cleanses body of heavy metals, toxins, and waste from its glutathione’s plus the fiber content helps with elimination of toxins in the digestive tract.

What is a CLEANSE?

  • Purpose: to cleanse and clean out the digestive tract
  • Goal: to eliminate toxins, fecal matter, parasites, and fungi from digestive system
  • Method: to eliminate common inflammatory foods as commercial dairy, refined sugar, gluten, soy, corn, peanuts, alcohol, and processed foods.
  • Supplements: eating whole foods, bone broth, fermented foods, low carbohydrates
  • Benefits: cleansing will help improve digestive health via improving digestive system function, elimination, nutrient absorption, and inflammation.

How to get started optimizing your liver function?

  • Start by cleaning our fridge, pantry, and freezer
  • Remove toxic foods, skincare, beauty, and household products from your house
  • Drink more raw vegetable juices (easy to make at home and without fruit!) – recipes in manual or follow me on Pinterest!
  • Add liver detox tea supplements into daily routine: milk thistle, dandelion, and turmeric
  • Eat more liver supplements or if you can tolerate it- eat beef or chicken liver from a grass-fed source as liver is a nutrient dense food.
  • Add more potassium rich foods to you diet as avocado, spinach, sweet potato (watch carbs), tomato sauce, beet greens and wild caught salmon.
  • Remove toxic oils as hydrogenated oils (trans fats), nitrates, vegetable oils and canola oil
  • Another method to increase bile flow and speed up elimination of toxins is with a coffee enema (I have not tried this one YET as a little scared!)
  • Supplement with Glutathione which is beneficial for liver cleansing to help reduce toxic buildup in the system. Glutathione plays a role in the function of the immune system as well as liver function.
  • Powerful herbs to support the liver include:
    • MILK THISTLE: helps eliminate build up of heavy metals, prescription medications, environmental pollutants, and alcohol in the liver.  Beneficial after chemotherapy and radiation.
    • TUMERIC: reduces join pain; helps as an anti-depressant; assists in digestion; improves blood sugar regulation; supportive to liver tissue and metabolism
    • DANDELION ROOT: packed with vitamins and minerals; natural diuretic effect to help liver detoxify via kidneys; strengthens immune system; beneficial to balancing blood sugar levels, decreases heart burn and improves upset stomachs.
