Is a Ketogenic diet for you? 

A ketogenic diet ideally is not crappy high fat diet with processed “keto” manufactured foods or high fat foods.  Ideally a keto diet includes lots of organic (in-season) low glycemic, organic low-carb vegetables, higher healthy natural fats and moderate amount of clean proteins (grass-fed, free-range or wild caught).  Eating a lower carbohydrate diet, shifts our metabolism from a sugar/carb burning (feeding a fire with kindling wood) and switching to a fat burning metabolism (large slow burning logs to keep a fire burning longer).  When we metabolize fat in the liver for fuel, put the body in a metabolic state called KETOSIS (Keto, keto-adapted, LCHF) and become fat burning machines.  Ketones are the by product where we produce.

When we are breaking down fat for fuel to keep us going all day long, the liver breaksdown down fat and creates ketones for our energy source – including fuel for the brain.  If you want to boost the fat burning fire then we should try limiting our “carbage” as Jimmy Moore says and stop being afraid of healthy fats and proteins… but don’t forget your vegetables!!    When we are breaking down fat for energy and getting in ketosis- we are producing endogenous ketones.  Products as KETO FIRE, Perfect Keto and Pruvit are all exogenous ketones in the form of beta hydroxybutrate.

Isn’t supplementing with exogenous ketones cheating as we should be able to produce our own ketones from our liver by burning fat for fuel because we are eating low carb-high fat?

Sometimes when we are transitioning from a high-carb “Standard American Diet” (SAD), to a ketogenic type of diet – we may need a little keto supplement to help us make the switch.  Or if you are “living life as a race” and still working on slowing down while reducing stressors and carbohydrates, a keto supplement may be beneficial as well!  OR what if you have memory, brain fog, focus and concentration issues?  Or perhaps you have leptin resistance- hunger hormone dysregulation?

I know I feel better (and find it easier when working) during the weekdays when I eat one big main meal per day (early afternoon) filled with vegetables, protein and lots of healthy fats but some days as on the weekend and vacations – I tend to eat more than one meal.  Also, fasting 16 hours is easy for me and thus eating in an eight hour window becomes easy- some days I eat in a five hour window and still feel energized.  I know I am burning fat but I still have blood sugar regulation issues because of my gene mutations (DNAFIT or 23andMe) and history with “adrenal exhaustion” – leaves me with carbohydrate sensitivity issues (insulin resistance).  We may sometimes need a little booster to get our body to make the shift to burning fat or perhaps on the weekend or vacation when your eating schedule is different.

What am I getting at?  Well I need extra help healing and rebuilding my body at a cellular level as well as re-training my body to burn fat for its main fuel source so Dr. Axe’s new KETO FIRE sounded interesting to me – for my “areas of opportunity”.  We are all different and there is not once size fits all but if you are struggling switching to a fat burner and burn more ketones then you may need a little help as with KETO FIRE.

I am adding the Keto FIRE into my week day routine when I do intermittent fasting (16 hours or more some days) and eat one main low carb-higher fat meal per day  – within the time restricted feeding window of eight hours or less.  This plan works best for me during the work week and keeps me energized for my training sessions.  I do have one Keto Feast shake a day once I “break my fast” for the nutrition benefits and now I will take the Keto FIRE caps in that time frame so I don’t break my fast with supplements. 
Let me know what you think and how you are doing with LCHF/Keto food plan as well as Intermittant Fasting!  Implement the eight elements of The WHOLESTIC Method as you can’t transform the WHOLE you by just eating LCHF – you must work on the other elements as well- sleep, stress, exercise, movement, hydration, digestion and happiness!
